#1852 - Turbo (Marmarostoma) kenwilliamsi - Beautiful Turban
Formerly known as Turbo pulcher - the common name is a holdover from that.
Fossilised, or possibly subfossil, opercula of one of the largest shallow reef molluscs off Australia’s southwestern shores. The snails are quite common generalist herbivores with a heavy shell, and the crevices in the limestone well above the highwater mark were full of these and other remains. Presumably they acculumated in deep crevices in the limestone back when sea-levels were a few meters higher.
The snails use these to protect their soft bodies, after they’ve pulled back into the shell. The bumpy surface faces the outside, and the inner surface is smooth and mostly flat with a spiral whirl.
