Fotomachine: to Russia with love
Ahead of his first performance in Moscow at Jameson Irishhood Party we asked british musician Fotomachine what first comes to mind when he hears of Russia.
“When I think of Russia one of my first thoughts is technology. From early Cosmonaut space exploration to pioneering synthesisers developed in the late 1930’s, Russia to me was always a place where forward thinking advances were celebrated.”
“I’ve had a lot of friends such as Kutmah and Actress who both DJ in Russia regularly. Actress in particular loves St Petersburg and has said that he’d consider moving over there. Hearing stories like that are enough to make me want to visit and see what’s happening over there. Russia always seems so far to me. Somewhere that I literally only hear about on TV or books so I’m looking forward to the culture.”
“I’m a fan of Russian producer Lapti. He’s pretty dope”
“I don’t know a lot about Russian music but I do like Gilbert Bécaud’s Nathalie which is about a Moscow Tour guide called Nathalie. It’s a old school French track but the end is Russian in style.”

Plenty of good deeds have been done to the dance music today – thanks to producer, DJ and label boss Fotomachine. Through his Ninja Tune sub-label Technicolour, he has focused on releasing a lefter field of electronic music: from Legowelt, Hieroglyphic Being, Kid A and Florian Kupfer, right through to Kutmah, Bnjmn and Levantis. Black Science is Fotomachine's newest, long awaited work. A four-track EP of musical alchemy that stands as Fotomachine's ode to weird and wonderful grooves, forthcoming on All City's new Jheri Tracks imprint. In amidst the mix comes "Patterns" – a standout track of tribalist and futurist allusions, described as a 'much needed love letter to hope and optimism through jaded ears.' Dark sentiments and moods are rooted within its revolving percussion and automatic bassy spirals, with the track reaching a real depth of emotion as its duration gets played out. A continuation of the power that Fotomachine unearths in his music. Forthcoming on All City's Jheri Tracks, Black Science drops on May 6th. Pre-order via Rush Hour now.
