Four Magistrates Redebut #3

“Yes, you read that right: I’m a liger. Half lion, half tiger. Two times the panther! That’s why illusions are my specialty.”

Hello, this is Diadema. As today is the Moonrise Festival, the Sleepy Minstrel has granted my request to compose this post.

My gifting records tell me that of all six elements, Void is the least harnessed. Rarer are those who can handle this element at an advanced level. With the rise of the Four Magistrates, this element has gained newfound appreciation in recent years through a Kromatistan illusionist, Rayan “Ryan” Lee.

Rayan was born in the Golden Circus, an entertainment and diplomatic institute based in Kromatista’s largest city, Emasia. Back then, the city was led by a twisted individual who saw the circus’ Beastfolk performers not as fellow living beings, but as products. In the name of “redefining entertainment,” he forced many of them to mate with one another and produce hybrids. All of these poor children were born very sickly, and most of them died within months.

This development is unsurprising. Those humans had the audacity to banish a Titan, after all. They were lucky to be dealing with the statistically “nicest” one.

Anyways, Rayan got pretty lucky. The performers thought about euthanizing him at first, but one bold tiger interfered and volunteered to raise him as his brother — an acrobat named Razak Malik. He took care of Rayan in the circus until he turned twelve, when the young liger realized his magic, and Razak was appointed the new Ringmaster. Knowing he could no longer be constantly available, the new Ringmaster sent his brother to another city, where a close friend would fund his magic studies. The talented little liger would graduate from his school within three years, setting records as both its youngest and fastest graduate.

Upon graduation, he immediately returned to Emasia and became a professional magician — and a hugely successful one at that. He’s had a pretty good and easy life in Kromatista… until one night, he had a strange dream: a gentleman in black said some very fancy words, a boy in shiny golden armor kept staring at him with immense awe, and an incredibly warm lady gave him a new name, Lee Sin Swee (李星瑞).

Whatever it was, Rayan was sold on their idea. And with that, his personal prophecy is fulfilled: for the first time in history, Kromatista would produce a warrior mage.

His Magistrate Armaments are Harvest (蓐收) the Crescent Scythe and Gembeam (監兵) the Star Wand.

“With every demon that exists, there is a human out there who is much worse. If I become that human, that’s a lot of work cut out for everyone else. Well, since it’s so hard for many to even define evil, I’ll have to take it upon myself to figure it out.”

Every soul with access to the Land of Dreams dreads of encountering this man. It’s not because of his red irises, or even the demonic serpent he wears around his waist, it’s just… how cryptic this freak is. Those who have never heard of his preposterous deeds would think him sophisticated and grand, from the dark blue coat, his well-combed hair, and his glasses adorned with chains.

Those who have? They shudder at the mere mention of his name — Ma Jingcheng “Cheng,” the Blue Executioner.

How many people can say that they’ve bested a god in combat, let alone a Titan? Well, this guy is known for beheading one. As a half-vampire who has slain multiple members of a sinister vampiric cult, Tefera the Devourer saw Cheng’s existence as a challenge and attempted to claim his soul. Unfortunately for her, the assassin’s talent in water magic, combined with his vampire blood, proved effective against her powers.

The Queen of Vampires agreed to end her pursuit of Cheng’s soul, but the dhampir demanded a greater reward: immortality for him and his fellow Magistrates. Now, with the cult purged, he has found his new calling as a bounty hunter and continues to hunt down malevolent entities — with decent pay this time.

His Magistrate Armaments are Juiza (執明) the Silver Axe and Chuva (禺強) the Battle Fan.

I initially planned to make individual posts for all four, but I no longer have the motivation for those. Cheng sucked it all up. So here is all of them in one place!

Ma Jingcheng (Macau), Dark Tortoise of Sapphire Water

Actor, dancer, teacher, assassin, vampire… this guy is many things at once. But not everyone gets to know about all the faces he wears, nor all the names he use. Especially not friends and family… well, maybe Hyatt gets a pass.

Ching Ka Lung (Hong Kong), Viridian Dragon of Emerald Wind

An exorcist and staunch believer of justice, knighted by King Eugene of Einlon many decades ago. His stormy temper often gets the best of him, but it doesn’t stop him from getting stuff done as efficiently as a swirling tornado.

Ryan Lee (Singapore), Pale Liger of Diamond Akasha

An entertainer who uses Void magic to create sweet dreams, smiles, and laughter. Besides being the only non-human amongst the Four Magistrates, he is a unique Beastfolk hybrid - a Sirimaunus.

Hsu Yiling (Taiwan), Scarlet Sparrow of Ruby Flame

A traveling doctor who is the backbone of the Four Magistrates, even if her merits are not sung as frequently as the others’. An independent and diligent lady who has dedicated her whole life to developing her flame-based healing magic.
