The Beekeeper Of Aleppo has been one of those books that has been haunting me for a while. You know when you keep seeing a book and knowing you’re going to love it but something stops you from buying and/or reading it? This was Beekeeper for me and it wasn’t until @tarheelreader gave me an wonderful opportunity to read the author’s second novel that I decided to take the leap and dive into this one. I was so wrong for holding off with this book. This is a beautiful and moving story of a husband and wife who flee Syria, ravaged by war and the terrible things they have gone through. Afra has been through such a traumatic ordeal that it leads to blindness and Nuri, a beekeeper, is hoping to meet up with his cousin Mustafa to carry on their livelihood in rural Yorkshire. First though, they have to get from Syria to the UK with all the dangers that entails and then they must learn about each other all over again, including coming to terms with their life-altering past experiences. This novel was not only heartbreaking in its premise but it was eye-opening throughout the entire narrative. I could visualise the horror of the war, the terror and danger that came with their incredible journey to the UK and their uncertainty and fear when they were physically safe but mentally haunted by their past. I’ve always been sympathetic to the plight of refugees, especially those fleeing from war/terrorism and this story confirmed all my thoughts and feelings towards these brave people who are only in search of a better life. It made me eager to learn more and hurt my heart to imagine their struggles.
