Okay it’s been a year. Let’s settle this.
Tales of the Empire episode 6 The Way Out.
We open to a creature. A little arctic mouse thing. We hardly see it since it’s a BLIZZARD out. We see the family. The father says the key phrase, “We seek the healer.”
This is to remind us that Barriss is a HEALER like she was in Legends.
Her assistant takes the family to her hut. The blizzard has stopped. There’s just a little SNOW. We see the ground but it is bare windswept earth and gravel.
We enter the hut and Barriss was warm and inviting. She does seem worried and regretful, but also penitent and LIGHT sided.
Then they are interrupted by WIND and the candle blows out so it is DARK. This is because Lynn is coming. It’s basic symbolic visual language.
They go outside and the WIND and SNOW are back. The dark clouds coming in line with Lynn’s approach. Barriss says the next key dialogue, the family asks what they should do and Barriss says, “Live.” Hmm, maybe that’s a key theme that will repeat?
They tussle and while it is still cloudy and foggy the SNOW has stopped. Just as Barriss disregards Lynn’s violence she is uncaring of the cold and weather. The SNOW starts again when Lynn attacks but it is inconsequential and as impotent as her attacks.
She warns about the cave, saying, “If you go in you will not come out.” The implication is THE SAME. Fourth Sister will remain lost. Lynn perhaps can remain.
In the cave the good and innocent characters know the way and Fourth Sister is LOST. She chases her reflection and becomes mired in fear while the others ascend. Barriss says, “I don’t want you to die in here.” And, “I’ll show you the way out.”
Barriss says, “Let me help you.” She stabs Barriss and instantly regrets it.
ONCE HER SABER TURNS OFF LIGHT ENTERS THE CAVERNS.
“You know the way out, you just have to accept it, Lynn.”
We see the outside of the cave, the creature is back looking for food. Even though the sun is setting it is very bright as the light is being cast on the cave entrance.
Barriss places her hand over Lynn’s hand which is on her wound. This mirrors the enby Jedi survivor in episode 5 and Barriss. She is prodding Lynn to use Force healing. ❤️🩹 You just have to accept it.
“I’m going to get you out of here.” Lynn bridal-carries Barriss to the entrance. She is no longer lost. She can see the LIGHT being cast by the setting sun on the entrance. She leaves her saber behind because that is her DARK weapon, and like Barriss she no longer needs it.
The camera pans down and we see the creature clearly for the first time in a lingering shot. It is looking for food and there are PLANTS on the ground for the first time. There’s LIFE outside.
The creature looks over to see Lynn and Barriss emerge into the open air. Lynn carting Barriss just like Barriss must have carried that Jedi last episode.
She’s ALIVE. Barriss saved Lynn’s soul so Lynn saved her life.
Forget logic, thematically it makes sense.
