I’m in love with an angel who’s afraid of the light Her halo is broken but there's fight in her eyes The song is Angel by Theory of a Deadman
The Avengers HQ was Home to many broken souls. It had protected people young and old for countless years from their demons. Perhaps the first noticeable resident from a severely broken past was Natasha. And when she had finally pieced things back together and used a fair amount of super glue to hold it in place, it was Wanda and Bucky who walked through the doors. They too fought to fix things that had been damaged long ago.
Even then, someone new took their place. Only these were younger faces, younger souls, and younger minds. It was hard to see children so damaged. First Sage and Bianca, then Enzo, Harper, Drew, Max, and Fox. Though it seemed like they might get along and bond over shared agony, that wasn’t the case. There were divides, and clear ones to be exact. Their pasts had shaped them to reject those they found threatening and those who could hurt them, while struggling to accept people who meant only to help them.
There was a time when even the strongest heard doubted whether they could truly help those in need. Alex wasn’t sure she could make Sage or Bianca feel at home, Enzo doubted Max would ever be forgiven or forgive himself, James struggled to believe that Fox could learn to live with her past without letting it cripple her, and Orion doubted Drew would ever care for him as family. It was hard, on all of them.
And it wasn’t until these broken souls started to help each other that things didn’t seem so bad. Sage was there for Bianca always, and Bianca was there for her. Even Drew found herself concerned with Bianca’s recovery though she was less than helpful at times. Fox looked out for Harper who in turn looked out for her. Penny kept an eye on Enzo who kept an eye on Max. It was a chain reaction so to speak, but there were still things that lingered.
Some people, like Sage, still found it hard to be a good person. They held their breathe waiting for the moment the consequences of this ‘goodness’ would be revealed. But Sage had been around longer. She was adjusting easier than expected. Fox, on the other hand, was less sure. She liked being with the others (except for Sage), and she loved Maria. In fact, she couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt at home. Yet things didn’t feel permanent. There was always the ‘what if?’ What if I have to leave? What if I’m not needed? What if I mess up? And though she never said anything, James knew. Deep down inside, it hurt him.
He was in love with an angel who’s afraid of the light. Her halo is broken but there’s fight in her eyes. And at the end of they day it was his own fault. He couldn’t blame her for his own falling in love. He just hoped she’d stop living like at any moment the rug would be pulled out from under her.
Draw The Squad
But I’m too lazy to actually draw it:
21 with Durames?
21: What do they do when it’s rainy?
They play scrabble quite a bit which turns into James dictionary checking nearly all of Foxes words, debates on whether she can use Spanish or he can use Russian, and lastly whether or not slang words or memes count. Aside from scrabble they devolve into literal children and color with crayons making stupid portraits of each other or their friends. There’s even been times when a large blanket fort makes its way into the living room and only a password can permit people entrance. Unless you’re Natasha and she demands to be let in because she’s bored and being her son you can’t say no or she’ll kill you.
James’ Shirt: “If lost return to Fox.”
Fox’s Shirt: “I’m Fox. Please keep him.”
Alex’s Shirt: “I’m Alex. Don’t listen to Fox.”
Sage: “You’re waving a knife at me!”
Fox: “ITS A CLEAVER!”
50 and 53 for Fox and Maria
“Are you drunk?”-not nearly enough.”/“I’ve been calling you. I left voicemails-where were you?”
— — —
Maria paced nervously in her room. She’d known that Fox was out and about in town, knew she could take care of herself, knew she had James with her for at least half of the day, and most likely was doing something mildly stupid which was why she hadn’t come home. However, it was now well into the early morning hours and she hadn’t slipped back into the tower yet.
Once again, Maria ended the call as soon as she got the “leave a message after the tone” prompt. She’d already tried countless voice mail messages and none of them had been answered. What was worse, she was all out of wine to ease her worries. Frankly, the combination of alcohol and anxiety wasn’t creating as much of a relaxing environment as she’d have liked.
“Pick up damn it,” Maria muttered, entering the series of numbers again, but with little coordination and shaking hands. For all she knew, something bad had happened. What? She wasn’t sure, but she sure as hell didn’t want to think about it.
Then, at last, almost like she was making it up, Maria heard a story of familiar footsteps. They paused momentarily by the door before a short knock followed. Maria didn’t respond, she simply tore open the door and pulled Fox into a bone crushing hug.
The contact was startling, and Fox’s immediate response was to recoil and fight back. Squirming slightly in the hold she managed to break free, but her face was immediately cupped by two warm and quivering hands. “I’ve been calling you. I left voicemails-where were you?”
“I didn’t mean to scare you-“ Fox began, trying to peel Maria’s hands away, “I just got caught up in something. That’s all.”
“Should I be worried? Are you okay?” Maria asked.
Fox meant to reply but her eyes fell on the mess of a nightstand containing and empty bottle. “Are you drunk?”
“Not nearly enough,” Maria snorted, missing the slight hesitation in Fox’s posture. She knew what happened when people got drunk, knew how they changed, and she was nervous. Of course, a rational part of her brain said that Maria would never hurt her. But years of experience told her otherwise.
“I was just helping an old friend, that’s all. Someone I haven’t seen in a while,” Fox replied softly, becuase she noticed the worry in Maria’s eyes, noticed the way they continued to search her for hidden injuries, and even the small tremble in her shoulders as she fought down excitement and relief to keep from overwhelming Fox. Maria cared, and maybe she’d genuinely scared her.
“Who?”
“Kayla. You wouldn’t know her,” Fox admitted, bowingh her head slightly. “I uh, I really am sorry for scaring you. I didn’t mean to.”
“I’m just glad you’re okay,” Maria smiled, hugging Fox once more only this time she didn’t fight it. Instead, Fox hugged back because this was what a caring parent did. They worried, but they forgave in a heart beat and held you until you knew iou were loved. “Now, go to bed. It’s ridiculously early. That’s an order by the way. I am your superior.”
“And my mother,” Fox snorted, “but only if you go to bed too. Okay?”
“Sure.”
“I mean it.”
“Whatever,” Maria smiles warmly, giving Fox a gentle nudge towards the door. “I have to sleep this off anyways.”
“I know. Just, drink water too, maybe eat something, and don’t be staring at a bright screen tonight. It’ll help. Trust me, I know.” With a gentle look, Fox left Maria alone and headed to her own room. Though she left too soon to notice the sad expression on Maria’s face. There were times she forgot how grown up Fox really was. How she’d had to live most of her life and how she’d had to take care of the people who were supposed to take care of her.
Fox: “I want everyone to know I’m about to do something extremely stupid.”
Sage: “Hey, don’t insult James like that.”
