I haven't read trc in a while so I might be wondering about something that's already been explained, but. do you ever wonder if there was a specific moment that the rest of fox way knew blue wasn't psychic? do you think blue knew what it meant?
I'm just imagining them finding out and maybe being a little disappointed but they can't show that to blue because they want her to know she is loved anyways, even if she doesn't have the thing that binds the rest of the house's inhabitants together. and blue wants to believe it, but she's seen what her mother and calla and persephone can do and this is the first time she's realising the reason she can't do the same things isn't a matter of "you're not old enough." it's a matter of "you would have to somehow fundamentally change who you are in a way that just isn't possible."
and that's okay, because blue likes who she is, or she does most of the time. she doesn't want to be weird and dreamy like persephone often is or sharp and guarded like calla has to be or even wry and cynical like maura can get. she doesn't want to be psychic. she's likened her gift to being the receiver of a telephone, when she really just wants to be able to hear the conversation. she just wants to know what it would be like.
it's not that she isn't loved, or that the fox way women stop caring about her. it's that from that point on she is aware that she is different from everyone else, and that kind of realisation sticks.
I can see her practicality coming from this as well. she knows she can't have a lot of what she wants, so she tries to set her aim low and prepares herself for disappointment. the thing is, she's a dreamer, and she wants more for herself, no matter how impossible. she wants to go to college and study trees and pygmy tyrants in other countries. she wants to see magic, even if it's only once. if there is enough magic in the world for that sort of thing, anyways, because if there was surely she would have gotten something more useful than just being able to strengthen the gifts of the people around her. she doesn't want to let herself hope for more than she has, but she does it anyways.
and can you imagine, in all this, the elation she feels when she realises what she is and what she can do in the raven king? she's doing more than just reflecting other people's talents and letting them shine. she's had a piece of magic inside her all along, and it's been guiding her to these adventures. it's not that she's less than. it's just that she isn't the same as anyone else. and it's not like she didn't know that already.
