Top-tier all-timer. Fucking perfect song.
I need to dig out my Foxbase Alpha t-shirt.
But only love can break your heart Try to be sure right from the start
Loveless is the best of this entire list.
Also, don't sleep on Foxbase Alpha.
Foxbase Alpha (1991), So Tough (1993), Saint Etienne
The earliest days of Saint Etienne, a concoction of twee and club that could only have been a product of the carefree, complacent, arrogant British cultural 1990s. Much like New Labour just a few years later, this stuff is only really of superficial interest, tuneful and innocuous but gloating with its delusions of radicality and importance. It’s good that St Etienne has repeatedly cited OMD’s Dazzle Ships as reference, as both these works are pretty much generational copies – only with fewer original ideas and less remarkable standout pop moments.
Pick(s): ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’, ‘Avenue’

Saint Etienne / Spring
