As Head Boy it was (technically) James’s responsibility to watch out for trouble makers and pranksters. As one of the best in both categories, he could spot others fairly easily. So he was quite good at that ‘watching out for them’ bit. It was the... actually handing out detentions that he didn’t do as much. Just the opposite really.
So when he rounded the corner to find Filch’s blasted cat chasing down Fabian, James picked up the pace. Moving quickly down the hallway, he casually threw an arm around Fabian’s shoulders when he reached him. “Careful there, Prewett, Filch’s got his eyes on you. Not up to something are you?” he asked conspiratorially, a spark of mischief in his eyes.
