Every ship Captain in Sornieth knows, one of the worst things that can happen to your ship is a Thorntail invasion. They hide behind the cargo, trawl through chests full of treasure, pilfering everything the crew might find valuable. Some captains try to bribe them away, others try to fight them off - generally with little success.
Since Thorntails started to befriend other dragon breeds of Sornieth and even be accepted in their clans, a new strategy arose among seafaring dragons.
A captain might hire a small group of Thorntails for their ship in exchange for "protection". The little collectors get to dig through as much treasure and miscellanea as they want, create caches throught the long journey, and get their share of the crew payment…and in return, keep other Thorntails away, and keep a keen eye out for thieves and stowaways.
Azloch and Azlem are two such Thorntails, living permanently on the clan ship and spending their time amongst the sails. When you're on this ship, instead of seagull calls it's cacophonous cackling from above, where a glance upwards reveals little Thorntail bodies scrambling amidst the rigging, heckling each other while they keep the sails in good order.
You get used to the noise, eventually.
