Where are you from?

“Minnesota, actually. Twin Cities area. But I moved here a few years ago. I used to live in Greenwich Village, but I moved here a couple years ago.”

Cool, cool. Okay, so, not to be one of those people, but what’s your star-sign? Or zodiac sign, whatever you want to call it.

“My star sign? My friend - back in Minnesota, she’s really into that kind of thing.” Chandler smiled. She was more than a friend, she was his closest family in many ways. “I don’t know much about that shit, but she says I’m an ‘aquarius to the T’….I think that’s a good thing?"

Chandler’s expression faltered for a second at the question, as he thought back to his last relationship. The smirk was back on his face as quickly as it had disappeared. "That’s kinda none of your business."

Sorry to hear it. Well, we’re here for you. That’s why we have a bell over the door. Heard it helps with broken hearts because angels get their wings or some shit. I dunno. You got any weird superstitions?

"No offense, but that’s the fucking stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.” That sounded a lot harsher when he heard his own words out loud, but he didn’t try to walk his comment back. “I’m not really superstitious, no.”

“New York. Grew up in Manhattan, but I moved here after I finished art school.”

“Gemini. My birthday was just a few weeks ago!” He took a sip of his coffee, then looked back at the stranger. “What’s yours?”

“Not really, no.” He shrugged. Sure, the situation with his family wasn’t the best right now, but he didn’t have any regrets and he knew they’d come around eventually. They always did.

“There’s a bell on the door?” He looked back, noticing it for the first time, and quickly turned back around to talk to his conversation partner. He missed part of what the other man said, and was suddenly a little confused about why they were discussing angels. But before he had time to ask, he was finding another question aimed at him. “My dad always taught me that you can’t cut birthday cake down to the bottom, because if you do then nobody will marry you. And I try not to walk under ladders, but who doesn’t?”

“Oh….I don’t really listen to a lot of music.” Harley laughed a little, then pointed to his cochlear implant. “I love album art, though. My current favorite is this yellow album with hands on the cover. I think the album’s called Lift Your Fists to Heaven or something like that. It doesn’t say it on the cover."

I guess you could say that someone’s broken my heart. Which is how I ended up here in the first place. Well, not here as in, this specific place but it’s why I left home. You’re not asking for my whole life story, though, sorry.

I don’t think superstitions are weird, they’re what bind us to people who came before us or to people that we’re surrounded by now. I don’t have any that I specifically follow, though, I guess maybe that’s why I ended up here as well. Should be more careful.

Nora shook her head quickly with a small smile. “Nope! I usually end up coming in here once a month. I developed an unhealthy relationship with my record collection when I moved around the corner a couple of years ago.” They were running out of room for her ever growing stack of records that spilled over from time to time, it drove her roommate crazy.

Nora huffed a heavy sigh, she couldn’t help it. It had become an immediate defensive reflex that became triggered whenever she was asked about her hometown. “North Jersey, and please don’t start in on shit about the Jersey Shore.” She couldn’t fight the need to roll her eyes either. “I promise you I’ve heard every mocking joke there is about my home state. Whatever you say isn’t going to be original or the slightest bit funny, trust me.” Jersey really wasn’t that bad, now that she didn’t actually live there, but it was hard to argue that with a New Yorker.

She shrugged noncommittally. “Pretty sure my roommate told me I’m a Sagittarius. Honestly I don’t pay much attention to that kind of stuff.” Any information she had been told about her star sign had gone in one ear and out the other. Nora just had too much other information bouncing around in her brain, which then led most people to say to her, ‘You’re such a Sagittarius’.

Nora made a face. “Honestly, I wish. Who has time to date nowadays? Definitely not me.” She tried to laugh it off, but the words kept spilling out of her, “God I don’t think I’ve dated anyone seriously since sophomore year of college, if you can call that serious that is.”

The strange question caused her to pause. Nora almost said no out of instinct, but then she recalled one thing she always did without fail. “Spilled salt always gets thrown over my left shoulder. Force of habit, my mother ingrained it in me. There is salt all over my kitchen,” A small burst of laughter escaped before she continued, “It’s a mess. Thanks, mom.“
