Mummers Props Survive Four-Alarm Fire
by Rory McGlasson
SOME CALLED it luck. Others good fortune. But all Fralinger String Band members care about today is their props came out of Monday's four-alarm fire unscathed.
They had watched in disbelief as a blaze destroyed a building on second street near Wharton Street.
The warehouse, located on the first floor is where Fralingers had stored their props and spooky surprises for 2013, power tools and other items.
You could feel the anxiety of mummers, drifting through the smoke-laden second street block. "We feared the worst," Tom D'Amore said on Tuesday.
A fire officer gave Fralingers the go-ahead to enter the first floor of the warehouse, dozens raced into the darkened lot, then reappeared wheeling soggy, haunted house props made of wood, paper mache - easy picking for an inferno.
Dozens of band members darted in and out of the dim warehouse. The Fralingers wheeled the props out one by one: A skeleton, a horse, and a tombstone with R.I.P written on the front - the irony.
"So far so good," D'Amore said as he and dozens of Fralingers wheeled out prop after prop.
"It's so much better than we anticipated,"
D'Amore, captain of the Fralinger String Band, said if they had lost everything, the value would have exceeded $75,000.
However, he did say, Fralinger would strut in the 2013 New Year's Parade regardless of the damage.
On Tuesday afternoon, Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers announced the Fire Marshall said the cause of the fire was due to Electrical Wiring. The right side of the building - where the fire broke out - was an auto repair shop with several cars that purportedly exploded during the blaze. That part of the building is destroyed. The second and third floors suffered severe damage when the roof collapsed. A twisted piece of steel beam is all that is left of the third floor.
"A firewall that separated the part of the building that was on fire from the section of the building that we rented," said Dan Marakowsky, the Fralinger financial secretary.
One Fralinger member came out of the warehouse with a horse shoe in his hand.
"See this horse shoe, it's our lucky charm."
Undeterred. With the luck on their side, the Fralingers strut on.
