"Housing First": A Look at the Housing Crisis in SF
[Protesters of the housing crisis in San Francisco wear google-styled map dots with the word "evicted" painted on top to illustrate the increasing numbers of LGBTQ homelessness in the city.]
The documentary short, Housing First, is the third student-produced film from our festival to be accepted into the Frameline’s International LGBT Film Festival; however, it the is the first to make it into one of the larger venues, San Francisco’s Victoria Theatre. This film premiered at the Eau Queer Film Festival in October 2013, one of only several university LGBTQ film festivals remaining in the U.S.

Three students, Nate Cooper, Neil Robmann and JR Smathers, produced their film about a current hot-button issue for San Francisco, the housing crisis which is disproportionately affecting its LGBTQ community. The 22-minute film questions San Francisco’s reputation as a “Gay Mecca”—“a place where people can come to feel safe and included as members of the queer community”. The documentary short features long-time housing and community activists Tommi Avicolli Mecca, Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco, and Brian Basinger, co-founder of the AIDS Housing Alliance, who discuss the impact of homelessness on S.F.’s queer communities.
Housing First will play as part of the Homegrown short film series on June 22, 2014. Kolmel Withlove of Frameline Film Festival calls Housing First an “intelligent and moving documentary.”
The 5th annual Eau Queer Film Festival, OUT of this World, will return to UW-Eau Claire on September 24-28 in the Woodland Theater of Davies Student Center with the support of a Blugold Commitment continuation grant and the University Activities Commission. All films and discussion sessions are free to attend! The finalized film schedule will be posted in mid-August at our website.
