project hail mary and the reception of it in fandom spaces genuinely gives me so much hope for my future as an aroace person. we have a character who has no people close to him, who “doesn’t even have a dog” and that’s okay. he saved the damn world. i think that we as a society should place less emphasis on typical paths (getting married, having kids, etc) and just focus on who we are as people. sometimes braveness comes from within, and i think that phm did a lovely job of showcasing that.

iron lung and project hail mary really have me thinking about life and the value of it. on one hand, we have simon, who society has deemed unfit to live, and on the other, we have grace, who is simply the best choice to go on this mission. these movies really show how precious life is, and that it shouldn’t be taken away from anyone. simon repeating “it’s more than me”. grace “saving the stars”.

yes, life is beautiful and magnificent, but who gets to choose who lives and who dies? why do they get to decide that? simon and grace both “had nothing” and that’s part of why they were selected. why does “having nothing” mean that your life is meaningless?

i know i keep yapping about this but oh my god. i’ve been doing so much research into the aromantic experience lately and wow. i’ve felt all of that growing up. celebrity crushes? no, i just want to be their friend. fictional crushes? no, i just want to hang out with them. i’m wondering if my irl romantic experiences weren’t actually romantic? this is actually so freeing because now im not just “fucked up” i’m just aroace, and that’s completely ok

every so often i consume media that makes me want to live forever and ever. project hail mary is one such film. the astrophage, the thing killing the sun, is still painted in a beautiful light. it’s not evil, it’s beautiful. there’s beauty in everything, you just have to open your heart to see it.
