Gaetz has not ruled out running in the 2026 Florida governor race.
It's not too early to think about the 2026 midterms – Republicans certainly are.
Ron DeSantis cannot run for a third term. So the political focus these days in Florida is on who will succeed him. And the GOP primary could turn out to be a free-for-all involving Ron's wife Casey, Matt Gaetz, and Rep. Byron Donalds who was endorsed by Trump.
The latest poll of the Republican field, conducted by the James Madison Institute, did not place Gaetz as a leading figure but highlighted the evolving Republican field where endorsements and name recognition are key factors that could shape the eventual outcome of the race.
The poll, conducted by Targoz Market Research from May 5 to 7, indicated that Florida first lady Casey DeSantis has an early lead with 29 percent, compared to Donalds' 28 percent and Gaetz's 10 percent support.
Trump is a wild card.
When informed about Trump's endorsement, however, Donalds' support grew to 44 percent, while DeSantis' share of the vote fell to 25 percent.
Donalds is the only Republican to officially declare his intention of running, although rumors continue to swirl about DeSantis and Gaetz, who has not ruled out a run, NBC News reported on Wednesday.
Gaetz was Trump's original choice for attorney general. And Trump is notorious for not being as loyal to his supporters as they are to him. So Byron Donalds should not treat Trump's backing as ironclad.
Gaetz told The Tampa Bay Times in January he is considering a run.
"I have a compelling vision for the state. I understand how to fix the insurance problem, and it's not to hand the keys to the state over to the insurance industry. If I run, I would be the most pro-consumer candidate on the Republican side," he said.
Right: Matt Gaetz – champion of consumers. 😂
It should be pointed out that Trump's popularity in Florida in autumn of 2026 may not be what it is right now.
With NOAA and FEMA in chaos, hurricane-prone Florida may become less appreciative of MAGA-DOGE cuts to disaster preparedness and relief. Those enormous cuts to the federal budget to give bigger tax breaks to billionaires may seem less "beautiful" after two Atlantic hurricane seasons.
The Republican Party is now up to a half dozen candidates of color seeking the GOP nomination, surpassing the previous record of four set during the 2016 cycle. But in the modern GOP — a party supercharged by anti-“woke” culture wars and whose presidential candidates lean heavily on white voters — it’s better left unsaid.
...
The GOP, said [Larry] Elder, should be celebrated for being “a party of ideas. It’s not a party of identities.”
He added, “It’s an interesting development. That’s how I would put it, not too shabby for a party that’s supposed to be a party of white supremacy.”
Wait until he finds out that it still is the party of white resentment.
God alone is a necessary being of himself and without Him nothing is made and without His effecting it there is nothing nor does it have in itself any real being. Hence, the holy Fathers rightly say that whatever is not created by God, either is God, or is nothing.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez is the first GOP presidential candidate to quit. Who's next?
From the August 29, 2023 article:
Finally, the Republican presidential “winnowing” process is underway: Miami Mayor Francis Suarez was the first of the duds to announce, on Tuesday, that he will suspend his presidential campaign. That frees his zero percent of supporters to flock to a new candidate. To whom will they go?
“Throughout the debate verification process, my team was in touch with the RNC as we worked towards meeting the qualifications for the first debate.
On Thursday afternoon, in consultation with the RNC, we believed the polling requirement would be met by two polls that were yet to be reported.
On Monday night, we learned that a Cygnal poll would not be counted due to its affiliation with Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign, despite multiple published reports confirming the poll was not paid for by any campaign. Two polls were certified by the RNC - Kaplan and Morning Consult (Aug 11-13) - however, we believed an equivalent Morning Consult poll (July 1-3) showing me at over 1% would certainly be certified.
I am sorry that this debate will not include my perspectives from the largest growing voting block in our country - young, conservative Hispanics. Additionally, Republicans will not be able to hear my story of how conservative principles of keeping taxes low, keeping people safe and focusing on creating prosperity for all created the most successful big city in America.
I respect the rules and process set forth by the RNC, and I look forward to working with my party to ensure we win back the White House and restore the path to a brighter future for our country.”
