Rare video alert: Lee at a Carnival party in Italy! Have fun and try to guess which costume he wore before pressing play. (translation below)

A Carnival dinner organized by the Consorzio Stampa Cinematografica for cinema stars. In attendance: the terrifying Lee Van Cleef, in perfect western attire, Franco Franchi in burgeois attire, Catherine Spaak and Alberto Sordi, who shows an ecstatic smile: the dinner is free. But he's not the only one enjoying himself. Among the award recipients, alongside Sordi, are Franco and Ciccio: those two don't need masks, not with faces like that. Prizes were also given for best Bonnie and Clyde-inspired costume. And finally, Liana Orfei. Having left her lions behind, she has turned to floriculture: she is playing the part of a rosebud. As the saying goes, there is no rose without thorns. Quite right. The thorns will come the moment Liana Orfei starts acting.

LE AVVENTURE DI PINOCCHIO - (Luigi Comencini, 1972)

The most beautiful cinematic adaptation of the immortal tale by Carlo Collodi (in fact a prestigious TV drama in 5 episodes lasting 320 minutes which were then reduced to 135 in the version for the screen that was obtained from it) offers Comencini (the "director of childhood" par excellence) the inspiration for an original interpretation of one of the motifs (the one that in fact represents the true sentimental meaning) of the story: the moving exaltation of a father's love for the miraculous creature that he has literally "made".

The style is reminiscent of both the Italian neorealism and a certain picaresque imagery and the locations are those of some ancient Tuscan countries and villages that well adapt to both the spirit of the book and Collodi himself. A bunch of great actors give life to the well-known gallery of the novel's characters: Nino Manfredi (as "Geppetto"), Franco Franchi and Ciccio Ingrassia (as "the Cat and the Wolf"), Gina Lollobrigida (the "Blue Hair Fairy"), Vittorio De Sica (the "Judge"), Lionel Stander (the giant "Mangiafoco") and the real surprise of the film, the 9 yo boy Andrea Balestri (a holy find by Comencini) in the role of "Pinocchio" while the great musical score by Fiorenzo Carpi underlines through its "themes" the wonderful actions that compose this extraordinary film.
