Maya Sanchez appreciation post:

- She is the coolest person in the room at any given moment, and she knows it

- She named a giant sentient robot “Big Red”, as if that isn’t the dorkiest name ever

- The fact that she calls Frank “Galleta”, which is Spanish for cookie, is absolutely adorable

- Her accent popping up when she’s excited/emotional!! Her voice is literally so pretty <3

- She’s a beautifully written character who feels insanely real, like she is a living, breathing person to me

- Literally like she is so multi-dimensional!!!! She gets to be flawed, she gets to have her strengths max out into weakness, she gets to have doubts and insecurities, but also be incredibly confident in herself!!! She gets to make mistakes, she gets to learn from them and grow and become stronger!!!! She gets to have her cute romance with Frank, with their friendship clearly being the core of it, and not just “oh yeah they’re in love because the narrative demands it”!!! She gets to have a complex relationship with Olivia, and Stanford, too!!!

- Seriously I am OBESSED with her and Olivia’s dynamic. They’re rivals. They’re besties. They play cards together. Olivia is jealous of Maya’s robo. They see each other as the one they have to beat. Maya knows her well enough to effortlessly intercept a punch and calm her down. Olivia ships Maya and Frank and helped (a lil bit) to get them together

- As an older sibling myself, her drive being centered around her brother makes me a lil emotional ngl

Me: Alright brain, today we gotta do normal human tasks like go grocery shopping and cook dinner. How are we planning this out?

My brain: MeCh CaDetS

Me: …no. Groceries.

Brain: need serotonin; pls watch show with Frank

Me: Literally just did!! It’s time for chores now!

Brain: Maya Sanchez. Maya. Sanchez.

Me: No!!!

Brain: Olivia<3

*slides into your kitchen wearing fuzzy socks and crashes into the wall* AND ANOTHER THING I love is the use of context clues!!! Like, they clearly had limited time to tell their story, and there’s not a lot of room for filler, but they let us know that there’s more than we see on screen!!!!!

Maya’s first line makes us think Olivia is her rival, and that’s true to an extent, but then they go on to show that they’re also friends; Maya calls her “Liv” and is able to somewhat calm her down when she attacks Stanford. Adds a whole new level to their dynamic because they’re made to work together throughout the course of the show when both see the other as the one to beat. They respect each other, but it’s still tense bc everything is a contest and Maya needs this, but so does Olivia!!!

Frank and Stanford are already friends, and they establish it so easily with their first exchange, build on it when Frank gives Stanford his pep talk, and we’re never actually given any background on them but it works!!!

Also, conversations that we know happened just by catching the end of them!!! When Frank says “Told you, new Robo.”!!! They spent the whole way running there speculating about what it could be!!!

When Maya opens a scene by saying, “That’s exactly my point! It’s his first day, not ours!”!!! There was a whole argument they had where Frank defended Stanford and Maya pushed for excellence!!!!

I am absolutely in love with the scene where Big Red and Thunderwrecker choose their pilots, especially those three or so shots of Thunderwrecker picking Frank. Just the camera movement, the lighting and everything show the moment perfectly; like the absolute perfect transition from Olivia’s disappointment to Frank’s excitement. Also using the Robo’s thermal(?) vision to show us Frank’s leg is really cool and clever, and the level of emotion in his voice when he gets celebrates is off the charts!!!!!

There’s a lot of scenes in this show that really get to me, but Frank and Maya’s overjoyed reactions coupled with Olivia losing her entire world has to be at least in the top three
