On this day (May 26th) in 1937, The Battle of the Overpass occurred. One of the most legendary moments in labor history, the Battle of the Overpass is exactly what its title implies.
On the right from left to right are Robert Kanter, Walter Reuther, Richard Frankensteen, and J.J. Kennedy. They were delivering UAW leaflets to the employees at the Ford Motor Company’s largest factory, the River Rouge plant. In an attempt to be extra careful, they got a permit from the city of Dearborn, MI. Shortly after this picture was taken, Ford’s private security team beat the crap out of the organizers.
