Franklin Senior High: Let's Talk, America

We are heart-broken to learn about yet another instance of senseless school violence, this time a mass stabbing at Franklin Senior High just this morning.  Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.

During times like these, we all pause to say something should be done. Schools should be a safe place for every child.  But then we go about our business and everyday lives.

Let us no longer go on our separate ways.  Let us keep talking to and hearing one another with respect and understanding. 

Today's mass school stabbing is a reminder that violence in American schools has reached crisis levels, and all of our children are at risk.  Something dangerous is happening (or not happening) in our culture that's enabling events like this to occur, and with disturbing frequency.

Let us as a society collectively decide that enough is enough.  We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the alarming frequency of school violence.  Let us have the conversation necessary to take a close look at what is happening in our schools and address the underlying causes of violence.

We at the National Institute for Civil Discourse are helping Americans to find ways to have meaningful conversations about this continued violence in our schools and broader society and we are especially helping young people have these conversations. To date, these conversations have focused on mental health, but we know there are many other causes and underlying factors. We know that as long as we can keep talking and feel heard, we're less likely to turn to violence.
