After Summer, American Impressionist artist Frank Weston Benson painted Sunlight, concentrating on re-creating the middle figure. The model is his eldest daughter Eleanor, who stands on a hill near her family's summer home in Maine. She holds her left hand up to her face, shielding her eyes from the glaring sunlight, the main subject of the work. Her right hand is placed on the hip of her white dress, which is cast in blue shadows and ruffled by the breeze coming from the Atlantic Ocean. Benson used a photograph of Eleanor as a basis for this work, but he adjusted her posture and lengthened her waistline to emphasize the elegance of the female figure.
