“Posing as Bereaved Father, Defrauds Three Undertakers,” Toronto Globe. August 7, 1931. Page 02. ---- (Canadian Press Despatch.) Ottawa, Aug. 6. - Orvile Mofffatt, aged 40, thought out  a brand new cheque-passing racket. Appearing at an undertaker’s parlor he would order with every semblance of grief, a casket for his poor, dead daughter. A cheque tendered in payment would b e$25 or so more than the cost of the coffin. Orville would pocket the $25, and the undertaker would have a hard time delivering the casket to a fictious address.

He tried the scheme twice yesterday, and succeeded the first time. Arrested on a his second attempt, he pleaded guilty in Police Court today. He was remanded a week for sentence. He has no daughter.

“To Face Charge At Brockville,” Kingston Whig-Standard. December 14, 1937. Page 2. --- NAPANEE Dec 14. - Chief Constable Watts received word on Monday that Claud Poutton alias Frank Harper had been arrested in Cornwall by Sgt. Labelle and will appear in the magistrate court of Brockville. on December 20 when several charges will be read. The car a new 1938 Chevrolet which Poulton is alleged to have secured from McFarland's garage in Napanee on a trade for a Plymouth 1934 Is at Cornwall according to the police of that town. The Plymouth car is alleged to have been secured from Mr Price of Jasper on worthless cheques. The permit for the Plymouth car was purchased In Kingston.

With Foulton at this time was a woman and the accused told the police that she was his wife. However It has been learned that the woman is from Montreal. Prom $50 to $75 damages were done to the Chevrolet car according to thes Cornwall police. 

The accused admitted he was wanted in Toronto and other places and had served time in the Kingston Penitentiary. 

On December 1 Poulton arrived in Napanee driving a Plymouth 1934 and went to McFarland's garage where he made a trade for a Chevrolet 1938. The amount to be paid was put on the finance corporation plan and while in Napanee Poulton sold the radio in his ear to one of the employees stating that he would purchase a new radio when he returned home. Some time after the deal had been completed there was a suspicion and Chief Constable Watts was notified who has since been working on the case 

The two years which the accused spent in the Kingston Penitentiary were for offences committed in Kingston.

In connection with the alleged fraud in Napanee Poulton will appear in Brockville. Court William Alcombrack of North Fredericksburg pleaded guilty to using profane language to Bruce Jaynes who is in charge of relief for the township and was sentenced to two months in jail by Magistrate E. J. Butler on Monday afternoon. Alcombrack was in court a short time ago for non-support for his wife and family and at that time the relief officer told the magistrate that he had work for the accused and the latter was given one week to go to work.

“Woman Given Two Years For Cheque Forgery,” Toronto Globe. September 27, 1930. Page 06. ---- (Special Despatch to The Globe.) St. Thomas, Sept. 26. - Mrs. Edith Vansaeder, 40-year-old Yarmouth Township woman, who is the mother of two grown-up sons, was committed to the Mercer Reformatory on an indeterminate sentence of two years less one day by Magistrate C. F. Maxell today on a charge of passing a forged cheque for $40. The woman admitted the charge and also to passing another cheque for $50 and giving a worthless cheque for nearly $100 to the Memorial Hospital in payment for six weeks’ care and treatment.

“Montreal, Feb. 24 (CP). - Accused of passing twenty-seven false cheques, totalling $200, in Montreal department stores, Pauline Bertrand, 21, pleaded guilty today and was sentenced by Judge Amedee Monet to the costs of the case or one month in jail.” - from “Odds and Ends in the News, Here, There, and Everywhere,” The Globe and Mail.
