Freckled Monitor - Varanus tristis
The common name Freckled Monitor corresponds to the subspecies Varanus tristis orientalis (Varanidae), characterized by having a striking patterned coloration, and confined to the north and northeastern of Australia.
This subspecies reaches a total length of approx. 60 cm. The coloration is reddish brown and is covered with numerous, irregular distributed bright ocelli (eye shaped circles) with a dark central spot on the back.
These monitors are arboreal (tree dwelling) but spend a lot of time foraging on the ground, especially around rocky areas.
