I would like preface this by saying I kept 2 sunflower asks saved for when I've got a rant or infodump ready to go and this is one of them
Anyway, rant time: I fucking hate seeing the very important and reasonable ideas of "If you have not lived a certain experience you are likely ignorant of certain aspects and nuances of it even if you've heard / read a lot about it, so be mindful of that and listen if people with that lived experience correct you about it and point out implications you missed" and "it is important to amplify marginalized voices rather than speak over them" get twisted into ideas like
"If you haven't personally lived this experience you can't possibly know anything about it and cannot remotely imagine what it's like (so don't even try to empathize there's no use, don't even try to see things from their perspective or to understand their struggles)"
and "since you can't know anything about experiences that aren't exactly your own you can't draw parallels between them and your own experiences"
and "drawing parallels and pointing out similarities erases the unique nuances of those other experiences how dare you compare them (so why should these groups join forces against anything that affects them both)"
and "it's not worth ever trying to stand up for marginalized people if you're privileged bc actually you are always speaking over them (even when none are present) and having a saviour complex (so don't even try to back up this person being harrassed) and acting like you are an expert on marginalisations you are not affected by (when you are correcting somebody on a common misconception of a marginalized group) and-"
And it fucking sucks bc ppl will use it to justify not helping others and not getting involved in fighting things that don't hurt them personally and it furthers separatist agendas and tears communities apart and discourages inter-group solidarity and I hate it so much
And it keeps fucking happening
