fred weasley x fem reader (red string soulmate au)
continuation to 『us versus the universe』
typed this on my laptop in docs so theres actually capital letters (woah)
Your red string had come in much later than most, you were 29. I won’t even try to imagine your surprise when you woke up in the morning and you had a red string wrapped around your pinky that led to none other than your twin brother’s ex-girlfriend. I remember your shit eating grin as your mind was no doubt thinking of new ways to tease me about how I'm soulmates with the better looking twin. I saw through you though, you were just as awkward as me. You took me out for drinks the same night, as friends. It was fun and it made me start seeing you as your own person rather than ‘my ex-boyfriend’s twin’. I spent most of my youth getting to know your twin so to me the differences between you two are like night and day. You’re a lot louder than him but equally chaotic, you’re a lot more hot headed and a touch more mean, your face when you had done something wrong was so much more obvious than George's. I have no idea how you ever got away with so much. We naturally grew closer as friends, the soulmate thing was a bit too much for either of us at that moment. Late nights spent together complaining about people we surprisingly had a mutual connection to and laughing together. Eventually we went on a date, to test waters, see if we liked each other romantically and to no one’s surprise, we did. A couple months later I moved in with you and took up the job of sales representative in your shop. It was a bit awkward at first seeing George everyday but we had grown so much since then and I had long made peace with what happened. Me and George sort of picked up where we left off and became quite close friends.
Our love was a lot calmer than it was when I was with George. Our relationship was much more secure knowing that our red string led to each other. It wasn’t really a youthful coming of age romance but rather a story built on mutual trust and gentle love for each other. You were like the calm autumn shower after the blazing summer sun (well you were never calm but you know what i mean). I loved our routines and small habits we had made together. Some people may have called our relationship monotonous but I’d say it was quite colourful in its own way. Picking out a tie for you every morning and watching you tie it around your neck, I would always get out of bed to fix your tie even though it didn’t need fixing and to give you a kiss before you left for work. I stopped working at the shop because I had found a work from home job which suited me quite well since that meant I wouldn't have to wake up at ungodly hours of the morning to get ready for the day. It also meant I could pop down at noon everyday to bring you your lunch and we could eat together before you finished the end of your shift and you could come back up and we could lie around all afternoon chatting about meaningless things. We went on dates every Sunday, something new everytime. It was all going great until the war began. Suddenly the streets were a mess and they had to desert their shop to go on the run from death eaters. I was separated from you for about 9 months and when we finally, finally reunited again, you left me again.
I had been there when it happened.
I saw you fall onto the ground when the wall collapsed on you. I witnessed your last breath, a laugh, how fitting. The world fell quiet for a while after that, my body was on autopilot for who knows how long. I came to my senses after the war ended, I was still numb but too overwhelmed with joy and relief that it was finally over and the dark side had fallen. I practically collapsed that day, so glad that I could finally rest, me and George had turned around to call your name and tell you but you weren’t there.
I remember being at your funeral, taking one last look at you. I didn’t cry, not that I wasn't sad but simply because I had no more tears left to give. I didn't speak at your funeral, I wish I did, I wish I spoke about what an amazing person you were. About how you always brought joy in the darkest of days but I suppose it's fine because everyone knew that already. They didn’t know about our plan though, we were going to marry, right after the war and settle down in a little house. You would make me breakfast in the morning because you had the early shift at the shop and I would pick out your tie as always. I’d start working maybe an hour later and then taking a break at noon to have lunch with you. After our working day had finished, then we’d have the most simple afternoon ever, lying around and watching you show me some new product you and George made for the shop. We’d laugh and then you’d pull me into your arms, and then we’d make dinner together in our cozy kitchen. We’d have spent countless days just like that Freddie, in each other's comfortable presence. Maybe our love wasn't something poets sang about, or something people would still be talking about centuries after we've been laid to rest in the earth. But those slow afternoons, intertwined fingers while walking in the park, and resting my bones next to you at night, i would give anything just for another day with you by my side. You have to understand darling, I didn't desire for a big house or shiny diamonds. I simply wanted a life where you’re still a part of it. But that’s not possible anymore. The lord has welcomed you home with open arms and that’s where you reside now. But sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night praying that you had chosen to stay over for just a few nights but I suppose earth was always too small and boring for you. The red string on my pinky isn’t there anymore, just an angry red scar but I like it because it reminds me of my connection with you. Life is hard without you, but I keep living everyday because I know you’d hate to see me waste away doing nothing. I think you would be happy to know that Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes is as successful as ever. Your youngest brother Ronald has joined the business, they still treat you as a co-owner of course, celebrations at the shop always come with a glass of champagne and a seat saved for you. I think you’d also be quite happy to know that I work at the shop now as a sales associate. When I hold the things that I had watched you tinker with for days in my hands I always felt connected to you.
I’m not worried about not being able to find you again in another life Fred. I believe that we were lovers 2.4 million years ago before fire was discovered. You would have courted me with shiny rocks and I would have let you into my cave and drawn pictures of us on the wall. In the cold winter we would have huddled together under animal hide and prayed that we would be able to make it through that harsh winter. I believe that we were lovers 3,600 years ago, living in our own little hut. I believe that we were lovers 2,500 years ago too, we’d find abandoned instruments to play together even though the violin had lost a string and 3 keys on the piano didn’t work. I believe that we were lovers 300 years ago, we would’ve lived on a small farm with a cat and some chickens. It wouldn’t have been much but it would’ve been enough for us to get by. I believe we were lovers in every lifetime before and between that and that won’t change. I’ll find you in the next lifetime too, and every lifetime after that. We’ll make up for lost time together, we’ll fulfill our promises together. I have absolutely no doubt that I’ll succeed in finding you Freddie, and that is because of one simple reason, we’re soulmates, and soulmates always find their way to each other.
