1. Dot is a spirit that can only return to the living once she finds her true love. Despite the warnings of her witch friend and connection to the living world, Celia, she attempts to find these feelings with paranormal scholar (but human) Casaubon. She also sets up a camera to regularly discuss with, hoping that if she ever ceases to exist or can’t remember her life if she reanimates, that it will serve as her memory.
2. Billie is a nature spirit who has struggled with disconnection to her element ever since the rise of humankind and industrialization. She accepts her slowly fading power with resignation, although the old fire still burns somewhere inside her heart. She never thought she could love something that wasn’t nestled within the earth; but as soon as she lays eyes on Dot, her heart floods with feeling.
3. Fred and Rosamund are reincarnations of the Greek gods Artemis and Apollo; Fred naturally takes the mythic blood in his veins to mean he will rise to huge success in this life as well. *insert sideeye emoji here* He falls in love with his best friend Max (also a witch, with no sympathy for old gods with too much self-importance). They bicker frequently about the ethics of magic and making your way in the world.
4. Casaubon, furious upon Dot’s eventual rejection, makes a cruel edit of her digital memory. His fury is vented upon all her friends, as he envies their access to worlds and experiences that he can only read about. No amount of credentials and research will make up for the fact that he is but human, and he can’t stand it. So he lashes out instead.
5. The first time Dot and Billie kiss, she can feel the air return to her lungs. Whether or not it was Billie’s own breath, she doesn’t know nor care.
