honestly discourse blogs on either side get to this bonkers level of discourse that goes completely off the rails lol. it’s never worth the mental strain arguing with people on the internet
Oh yeah, even when I agree with one side’s points I have to admit it can all get really stressful getting too into that part of internet culture. I don’t think anyone can be healthy, happy, and such while arguing constantly with people online; endless debates with no possible conclusion in sight will wear you down.
I think I stopped talking about shipping discourse as much when I shifted special interests away from Osomatsu-san into media that had more characters that weren’t relatives, and that meant I no longer was always trying to avoid fanmade content I hated. Sometime last year I learned that lots of fans of media don’t check a fic author’s previous works and bookmarked fics before reading their work, and it reminded me how I’d picked up that habit from my Osomatsu-san days where every other fanartist you’d see was an obnoxious incest shipper. I’ve never seen tumblr discourse as intense and off the rails as I saw it during that 2016-ish time period (which being in the Osomatsu-san fandom didn’t help), but maybe it’s still out there and I’ve just gotten better at curating my online experiences. I’ve lost friends to The Discourse along the way, and I still get annoyed at stuff online (and can’t help the urge to complain or vent every so often), but I’ve realized I’m a lot happier when I spend more time away from those angry environments.
