Fairy Tail Rare Pair Week - Day 2, Distance! First of all, I was genuinely surprised how few fanfics there are for these two because they used to be a popular choice for some time back then. But oh well! More excuses to give them more attention again <3
“You! Idiot!” Every word she said was underlined by the sound of the pillow in her hand meeting his body. Her emotions had taken control the moment the rune mage walked through the door of their house. She had been so worried about him, and feared that he might end up doing something he would regret later on.
“Mira. Mira!” The pillow ending up in his grasp right before it could hit him for the approximately one hundreth time let the take over mage freeze. Her blue eyes gazed up at him, emotions storming in them like untamed waves of the ocean. His tone had grown firm, and the way he had kept the pillow from hitting him one more time just emphasized it.
After a long moment of just looking at each other, Freed slowly shoved her hand that was still holding onto the pillow as well aside. Mirajane gave no hint that she wasn't gonna hit him with it again, nor did she drop it. But for now that was enough. He needed her to calm down.
And yet still, he wasn't the first one to speak up. Instead it was her, lips quivering with a mixture of anger and relief. “I was worried about you, Freed.” Mira shook her head, gaze cast down.
She had seen the look in his eyes before he had walked out of the guild hall with an aura around him that promised no good. To many eyes he would still seem calm, but they, she... had felt the ire driving him after he had heard what an enemy had dared to do to one of his best friends. She knew how confident he was, how powerful, how dangerous. And she was able to comprehend the rage. If someone touched her family, then she wouldn't hesitate to showcase her own power either.
But there was the subtle difference of her not liking to hurt anybody else. She had no issues being ruthless if it was the only way but she didn't like taking this path. And with that, she wasn't saying that her boyfriend liked hurting others. What worried her was that he had less qualms to take an utterly ruthless path, that his ever so calm and collected attitude bore a dangerous core that even few people of their guild had seen in action because control was an essential thing.
For them both.
He might have gone too far. Or he might have run into a trap.
But now he was here, and she had no idea what to make of the emotions spilling over. He was safe, and she was so goddamn thankful for this. She wouldn't be able to bear losing him. He understood her nightmares and inner battles more than anybody else and she loved him sincerely.
Her demons had fell in love with his, as well.
“I'm sorry.” He finally spoke, voice low but affirmative like it tended to be. Mirajane had let the pillow drop to the floor without taking note of it. Freed reached forward with caution, almost as though asking for permission to touch her. When she didn't say anything the Raijinshuu's captain brushed a white strand of hair behind her ear with all the gentleness in the world. It was such a contrast to how she had seen him before he disappeared this morning. “I didn't mean to worry you.”
Mirajane barely heard herself sigh. The touch soothed her against her will but she didn't protest. Instead she looked back up, the look in her eyes a little harder than before. “Are you injured?”
“Barely,” Freed responded, deep voice still calm. He noticed that his touch had managed to calm her down a bit and he noticed that it got her back the strictness she had been striving for. Deep down he knew that he somewhat deserved the hardness in her beautiful eyes.
“What have you done?” This question was voiced with a little more caution but her eyes never left his. If he tried to lie, which she didn't think he would, then she would see it in his uncovered greenish blue eye.
There was a pause but none he took because he considered to think of anything else but the truth. His answer still remained vague, but he meant it. She knew. “Nothing I regret.”
Another sigh left her lips and she looked down again. Mira felt how his tautly muscular arms sneaked around her, and naturally she let herself get comfort and assurance in the incoming embrace. Her voice was but a mere whisper by then. “Did you break Fairy Tail's rule?”
“No.”
And this time the answer came quicker. He didn't want her to question his reply, she thought, and the tension in her shoulders vanished.
“I sincerely am sorry for worrying you, Mira.” Freed had lowered his voice as well. His fingers were soothingly treading through her soft hair and his chin was resting on top of her head. He could feel that her breath had calmed down and for a moment that was all he listened to before she broke the silence again.
“Just don't do that again.”
She knew that she wouldn't receive an instant answer. There was the hesitance she expected and she understood. This wasn't a promise he could give. It had been his emotions and the temporary loss of control over them that had caused his reaction after all.
“I will do my best.” And he knew that this was something important. None of them could allow their less pretty sides to show up too regularly. It wasn't a good role model to be. And should he ever become a father...
It was a thought too far into the future, but ever since he had been with Mirajane it had become more prominent than ever.
“Alright,” Mirajane muttered and brought a few inches more distance between them again when she loosened the embrace a little and looked up. Freed stopped stroking her hair, looking at her expectantly. “I love you, Freed.”
It wasn't what he had expected to hear right there but it managed to soften his features. “I love you, too, Mirajane,” he spoke and caught the glimpse of a smile appear on her face. It would have been the stereotypically perfect moment for a kiss but that moment got delayed for a bit when he added something. “So does that mean that I am forgiven or do I have to expect to get hit by your pillow again?”
Mira's look was priceless, but most of all because her eyes lit up and she finally released a genuine little giggle before gently hitting the man's chest with her flat hands. “Freed Justine, you are an idiot!”
And one edge of his mouth quirked up in lopsided smirk. “I believe you said that before.”
