「イカ釣りの話なら、稲田さんの話を聞くといいよ」 前浜で昼飯を食べていたら、たまたまいた知り合いが薦めてくれた。そうして初めて顔を合わせた稲田さんは、快く貴重な話や手づくりのバケを惜しみなく紹介してくれた。自分自身はイカ釣りをしない。それでも稲田さんの話にのめり込みだった。何事でも、本物の情熱を持っている人の話は面白い。 A friend just happened to tell me about Inada-san when I mentioned I was trying to write an article about squid fishing. Despite being our first time to talk, he told me all about squid fishing and his handmade baits. I’m no squid fisher, but I was completely immersed in his stories. 5号の記事で最初に取材した、作り手の工房が集まっている小曲の森道。何も無かったところに工房を自分たちで建て、今では島に暮らす作り手が少しずつ集まる場所になった。 The first article written for ORB 5 was about this quiet path in the woods where a few studios are located on the island. 　5号の記事に合わせて、100年前に小笠原を訪れたフィアラというチェコ人画家について調べていた。彼について調べていく過程で多くのアーティストたちが同じ時代に小笠原へ旅していたことを知った。その背景には原始的な世界へのタイムトリップという当時の芸術的な流れと、ポール ゴーギャンの辿った道に対する憧れがあった。時代は変わったが、今も島には物作りをする人達が訪れ、暮らしている。今も昔も、インスピレーションを求める人にとって小笠原は惹きつける力を持った場所なのだと思う。 The story of the Czech painter Fiala, who traveled to Ogasawara 100 years ago, was one of the key subject for ORB 5. While searching for details about him, it became evident that many other artists had also journeyed to Ogasawara around the same period. What brought them here was the artistic trend of searching for a primitive world, and admiration towards Paul Gauguin.
