Overly specific game genre I like: puzzle/adventure with a language barrier that you personally translate.
Lexico: very old freeware Verge engine adventure game where you find various glyphs as you explore the map and have to figure out what the words likely mean. The simplest example is the first "on/off" and "open/close" and "hot/cold", but god help you with some glyphs...
Tôtem: you load up locations where giant alien... entities are found and have to navigate dialogue trees with only your own assumptions of what the glyphs mean and the entity's reactions based on the two grid charts of Empathy/Apathy/Happiness/Sadness and Enraged/Contempt/Confusion/Knowledge.
Chants of Sennaar: puzzle adventure (with some stealth bits) where you have to work out from context clues what the words most likely are and how to talk to and exchange things with the NPCs.
Related but not quite the same:
Treasure of Rudra: JP-only SNES RPG where a language magic system is at play and the player can create their own magic spells by combining prefixes, suffixes, and core words.
