Library Haul!
Hey Guys!!! So I have been mulling around in my head for a while the idea of creating a bookblr, and I finally decided to do it! I hope you guys enjoy this first post of the books that I got at the library today.
1.I didn’t get this book today from he library but I did get it in the last week from the library, so I decided to include it anyway. The Gentlemans Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee is about a young gentleman named Monty living in the 1700′s who is about to embark on his tour of europe with his best friend Percy and his sister Elizabeth. Needless to say Monty’s idealistic dreams of his tour are not exactly a reality and things go awry even before they leave England! This is out book club book this month and I am very excited because we are going to be skyping with the author during our meeting. Thsi book is a good read for anybody looking for some bisexual representation, asexual representation and biracial representation. I am very excited to read it for our book club discussion.
2.At a certain point of my childhood I chose books simply by quantity and not quality but I was pleasantly suprised when I found the gem that is The Diviners by Libba Bray. I was equally surprised when I found out that The Diviners is not a standalone, but a series! I tried the second book, but it didn’t stick for me but recently I was told that Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray the second novel in the series has some good LGBTQ+ representation, and so I decided to give this book another try. The Diviners is a great series for anybody looking for some Jazz Age Debauchery, flawed and sassy heroines, and a good dose of magic and mystery. It’s not a short book, but well worth the read.
3.I can’t remember what site I found this book on, whether it was Book Riot or Youtube, but I can remember that I was looking for some YA Contemporary fluff (who saw that coming ;)) and I found Wanderlost by Jen Malone. A tale of a teen girl taking her sister’s place as a tour guide in Europe, and then predictably things going sideways and developing feelings for a boy. It’s a story that’s been told a million and one times, but it will be a good guilty pleasure read. I would recommend this book to anybody who wants adventure and feels during the summertime! It is definitely not the most intellectual read on this list, but there is nothing wrong with that.
4.I recently read Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides and was interested in reading something else by him when I happened by Fresh Complaint: Stories by Jeffrey Eugenides. A collection of short stories that like most of Eugenides’ work is about “what it means to be American in our time.” I really enjoyed Middlesex and at only 285 pages I couldn’t turn down this book. If you like literary fiction and books about the american dream than this is for you. Note: I was going to put this book down on the shelf but I forgot and then checked it out kind of by accident.
5. I recently read Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell and I am currently reading Carry On by her so I decided to put on hold Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. I have read almost everything else of Rowell’s (I love fluff ok) so I was not surprised to hear the inventive premise of this books. Two women at work Beth and Jennifer know that their work email is being monitored but they send each other funny and crazy emails never the less. Lincoln who is the man monitoring the work email finds these emails and can’t bring himself to report them even though it is company policy... What will happen to the three of them? Rowell is an adorable writer and I am excited to read this book no matter how ridiculous the premise.
6. I found this next book the same way that I found Wanderlost, I was browsing for fluff and I found The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore. It is a book about two family's who are rivals in their shared profession of travelling and preforming. The main character Lace Paloma ends up getting into some trouble and is saved by Cluck Corbeau a boy from the rival family. It seems like an interesting read, similar to premise to Romeo and Juliet. The interesting thing about this book is the type of preforming that the Paloma’s and the Corbeau’s do, the Palomas preform in mermaid exhibitions and the Corbeau’s tightrope walk in the trees. A book for all of those readers who want a sweet ya story about two teens on opposite ends of a family conflict.
7.One of my favorite times of year is the end when everybody wraps up the best books they read, and last year (crazy to say that isn’t it) when I was browsing through these books to find the perfect book for a friend I found Marlena by Julie Buntin. A book about a 15 year old girl named Cat who gets swept up in infatuation for her new neighbor Marlena, only for her new friend to drown a year later. Cat tells the story from decades later as an adult and reflects on the whirlwind friendship that changed her life. I was drawn to this book because of it’s inclusion of a disastrous character who challenges the pro-tag's perspectives on life and being a teenager. A good book for anybody who is looking for a new literary read.
8.I was watching a video the other day of “The Best Short Reads” and one of the girls in the video recommended the book Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler. It is a book in the Hogarth Shakespeare series, which is a series that takes different authors and has them adapt a Shakespearean play into a modern story. I was very interested in this whole premise and I was very glad to find this book on the shelf of my local library. This specific book in the series is based on the The Taming of the Shrew and is about a women Kate who feels stuck in her life until she cooks up an outrageous plan with Dr. Battista to keep his lab assistant Pyotr in the country. I love Shakespeare and I am excited to read this book as I have not yet read The Taming of the Shrew. This would be a good book for anybody who likes a good plot and some fun and wild characters that are a trademark of Shakespeare.
9. I have been reading the anthology MatchUp that was edited by Lee Child recently and so I decided to try out the other anthology by the same organization FaceOff edited by David Baldacci. The anthology pairs some of the best thriller writers of the 21st century and has them write short stories with their most popular characters. Including stories from Dennis Lehane, R.L. Stine, Steve Berry, John Stanford and Lee Child this book is sure to be a great way to get into more thriller if that is what you are interested in. I really enjoyed MatchUp and I will most certainly enjoy this one as well. I recommend either MatchUp or FaceOff for anybody looking for a good anthology with a wide variety of characters, and a lot of adventure and mystery.
