Why do you think Asgore says "I want to see my wife and CHILD" when you defeat him instead of saying "I just want to see my wife and CHILDREN"

This does seem strange because there is evidence that Asgore does care about Chara, his adopted human child. The strongest piece of evidence is the hand-knit sweater he still has, that was very likely made by Chara.
As originally suggested by @wolven0ne-universe and @milkasingularity, Asgore likely only refers to Asriel because unlike Chara, Asgore lost Asriel to violence. Asgore has not shown any evidence of knowing Chara’s original plan, meaning he would think Chara’s death was due to a “natural” illness. A lab entry seems to confirm this.

With Asgore having no idea of Chara’s plan, their death was unfortunate but inevitable. On the other hand, Asgore could have stopped Asriel from crossing the barrier. His son’s death did not have to happen, and he likely feels guilt from losing Asriel.
