Dagger Squad Random Headcanons: Billy “Fritz” Avalone

Pretty please go easy on me with these, I’m trying to be culturally mindful while still incorporating the random stuff I have swirling around in my brain for this dude 🫠

Born and raised on Oahu

His dad is prior service and he basically grew up with the military being a constant facet of his life

Half Filipino, half Hawaiian

Immense pride in both heritages

Learned how to make Shanghai lumpia from one of his titas and is now worshipped by the squad anytime he brings a tub of them to work

One of the few squad members to have tattoos

Has a massive thigh piece that he got shortly after graduating from basic flight training in Pensacola (he earned that shit; likewise, he earned that tattoo)

Pidgin game is ON POINT

Honestly his callsign should’ve been “Shoots brah” because he says it all the damn time

Drives Toyota and will drive Toyota until the day he dies

First ride was a lifted 2003 Tacoma with a MASSIVE bass booster in the backseat

He’s since moved to a nicer Tacoma as his daily driver but he still has his lifted old shitbox

Natasha Trace / Phoenix: Born in California. Has lived in every single state for at least six months except for, ironically, Arizona. Refuses to ever return to Minnesota. It Knows What It Did.

Jake Seresin / Hangman: Born in Texas, grew up going to boarding schools on the East Coast with all the other kids from old money families. Spent summers and holidays at his family’s houses in the Hamptons, Chiantishire, and the south of France.

Robert Floyd / Bob: Born in Wisconsin, moved around the Midwest a lot and was always the new kid. Prefers cheese to beer any day of the week and feels most at home in a cornfield.

Javy Machado / Coyote: Born and raised in Louisiana, New Orleans specifically. Never left the state before joining the Navy. Refuses to accept any version of the French language that isn’t Louisiana French.

Reuben Fitch / Payback: Born and raised in South Carolina. Would kill a man for pimento cheese.

Mickey Garcia / Fanboy: Born in Florida, grew up in New York. Proudly refers to himself as the eponymous Florida Man™️.

Callie Bassett / Halo: Born in New York, grew up in California. Refuses to take a side in the West Coast vs East Coast debate. Whichever side of the country she happens to be on is the best one.

Neil Vikander / Omaha: Born and raised in Nebraska. Actually grew up in Lincoln and went to UNL (go Cornhuskers!), but there was already a Lincoln and a Husker in his squadron, so Omaha he became.

Brigham Lennox / Harvard: Born in Utah, grew up in Massachusetts. Must pronounce his callsign in the Southie style before he acknowledges you.

Logan Lee / Yale: Born and raised in Connecticut. Harvard was his dream school, but he got waitlisted and ended up at Yale. Has boycotted the entire state of Massachusetts ever since.

Billy Avalone / Fritz: Nobody knows. As far as the Navy is concerned, Fritz just showed up on a carrier one day, climbed into the cockpit of an F-18 and the rest is history. Fritz encourages all the rumors and feeds people different rumors of his origins because he’s a dramatic bitch. (The longest-running rumor is that Fritz is the eponymous Florida Man™️. Fritz does not deny this in the slightest.)

I asked Manny Jacinto how Fritz got his call sign and if he had a backstory for him. This what he said:

"The only reason I could think of him being Fritz was like the term 'on the fritz' where he's like kinda always on edge like you don't wanna piss him off. So that's kinda what I carried throughout the film."

Fritz being someone you don't wanna piss off would make so much more sense as to why Payback said "shit that's Fritz." Theyre scared of him 😭

Summary: How Billy Avalone got his call sign, "Fritz"

Warnings: most likely inaccurate navy stuff, Billy being kind of a jerk to his fellow pilots, anxious Billy, fluff, facetime calls, teasing

A/n: I asked Manny how Fritz got his call sign and he gave me his own reasoning for it. I wanted to write something based off of that.

It's around that time now that the new recruits start getting their callsigns, and some are a bit nervous for what the senior pilots are cooking up.

Billy has been on edge leading up to the naming ceremony for the past week. It's his first year as a junior officer in his fleet replacement squadron, so he's expecting it should be anytime soon.

"Are you nervous?" You ask through the phone, rummaging through something on the other end.

"A little bit. I hear them whisper but I have no idea what it could be. What if it's something stupid or embarrassing?" Fritz tells you as he ties the laces on his boots.

"Isn't that the point?" You chuckle.

Billy shrugs, "Yeah I guess."

"Just don't do anything too embarrassing." You say it as if it's that simple. As if not a single small slip up or mistake can give people ideas for a call sign that will stick with him for the rest of his career. No pressure at all.

"Easier said than done sinta." He lets out a groan, "I'm really not looking forward to it."

"I'm sorry baby." You pout at the camera and he notices your face drop as you look past it. "Oh shit I'm gonna be late for work! I gotta go!"

Billy frowns, not wanting to end the conversation with you already. God, he misses you so much. But duty calls. "Okay, bye. I love you."

"Bye" you say before the call ends and your face disappears. Fritz stares at his reflection on his phone in disbelief. You didn't say you love him back. You always say it back no matter what! He's about to call you again before realizing that he's also about to be late so he quickly finishes getting ready and goes to work.

"Hey man!" One of the senior pilots, Glitter, greets Billy as he enters the room. All Billy does is make a gruff noise in response, earning a confused look from Glitter. "The hell's wrong with you?"

"Nothing," Billy grumbles before walking away, not even sparing a glance back as he heads for his assigned aircraft for the mission.

He tried to keep his focus steady as he flew, he really did. But the his facetime call with you just wouldn't stop bothering him. "Hey," he hears a pilot from an aircraft, Ducky, say in his ear. "Are you good?"

"Great. Why do you ask?" Billy says through gritted teeth.

"Cuz you're about to miss the landing."

"Oh fuck!" Billy snaps back to his senses and locks in just enough so he can lower down and land on the ship. He breathes heavily and throws his head back against the seat as he closes his eyes in relief. That was a close one.

When he gets out, Ducky runs towards him with concern written all over his face. "Are you-"

"I'm fine!" That's the second time Billy has snapped at someone today. And he can't find the decency to care.

After work, Billy heads to the nex for some more household items for his place. He checks his watch and realizes you should have gotten off work a few minutes ago. He pulls out his phone but it goes straight to voicemail. He lets out an annoyed groan, goddamn awful service!

Just as he slides his phone back in his pocket, someone slaps a hand on his shoulder, making him flinch. "Sorry," Glitter chuckles, "a few of us are gonna go to the bar later tonight. Do you wanna come?"

Billy hesitates for a moment before agreeing, "Yeah sure. Whatever."

Later at the bar, Billy stares at his phone for the majority of his time there. Just waiting for a text or call or anything from you. But he gets nothing. He pays no mind to the senior pilots sharing stories of how they got their callsigns to the junior pilots.

"Avalone, why don't you join the rest of us here in the real world? You haven't taken your eyes off your phone all night." Ducky chuckles, far more annoying now that he has alcohol in his system.

Billy looks up, glaring at Ducky before begrudgingly setting his phone on the table, crossing his arms over his chest with a frown. Glitter chuckles, "what is up with you? You've been on the fritz all day! Especially during the assignment earlier."

"I told you, it's nothing!" Billy snaps, causing the other guys to share a look. He lets out a low groan before standing up, "I'm going to the bathroom." He shoots the group another annoyed glare before walking away, leaving his phone on the table.

As he washes his hands, he stares at himself in the mirror. "This is not how I should behaving. Maybe she just forgot....but how could she forget?!" He talks to himself in the mirror. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. "Just go back out there and be friendly. You can do this Avalone."

He takes a deep breath before stepping out and rejoining the group. Ducky nods his head in greeting before gesturing to Billy's phone on the table. "Someone was calling you after you left. I dunno who it was."

Billy's eyes widen before he snatches his phone and sees a missed FaceTime call from you. "Uh I'm just gonna step out real quick." He ignores the group's confused looks before stepping out of the bar.

"Hi baby!" You greet as soon as you answer the call.

Billy breathes a sigh of relief, his shoulders immediately relaxing as soon as he sees your face pop up on the screen. "Hey, sinta."

"Sorry for the abrupt end to the call earlier. I was so caught up in talking to you that I forgot what time it was."

"No problem." He puts on a genuine smile before anxiety starts eating at him. He opens his mouth to ask but you interrupt.

"I also realized that the call ended before I could say I love you back. So I love youuuuuuuu. I would've called you back but I knew you had to get to work and then I got stuck running errands after work– God its been eating at me all day that I didn't say it back." You chuckle at your rambling before finally falling silent.

Billy just stares with his mouth hanging open and his eyes wide. "Oh pfft that's okay," he brushes it off. "It's no big deal."

You raise a brow, unconvinced. "Really? No big deal? To you?" He shakes his head. "You weren't freaking out at all?"

Of course you could see right through him. He lets out a defeated sigh, "okay fine it's been bothering me all day!" He grumbles and you laugh on the other end. "I thought I did something wrong, then I got in my head during the assignment and almost missed the landing."

"Shit, it really got to you didn't it?"

"Yes! It really did!" He exhales.

"I'm sorry. I love youuuuu" you blow a kiss through the screen.

He pretends to catch it and places his hand on his heart, "I love you too."

You look behind him to see neon lights strung along the roof of a building. "Where are you by the way?"

"Oh I got invited to go to the bar with some of the guys."

"What?! Why are you talking to me right now? Go inside and hang out with them!"

"But I'd rather talk to you." He pouts, causing you to chuckle.

"You can call me back later. Go have fun with the other pilots." You make a gesture motion with your hand.

"Bu-"

"No buts. We can talk later, I love you."

He lets out a relenting sigh. "I love you." You hang up the call and Billy slides his phone back in his pocket before walking back inside.

When he hates his seat, he's feeling much lighter than he did when he left. "Hey Fritz, everything okay?" Glitter asks.

"Yeah, my girlfriend just called and– wait Fritz?" He furrows his brows and stares at Glitter with wide eyes.

Glitter nods with a joyful grin, "Yup that's your new callsign!" Billy scoffs while the rest of the guys laugh at him.

"Ease up Fritz," Bob, another junior pilot from a different squadron, tells him. "It could be worse." He leans forward to whisper, "I got Bob."

Billy's brow furrow in confusion, "but that's just your name?"

Bob looks at him with a deadpan expression that says everything "...exactly."

"Yeah it could be Glitter or Ducky," Jeckle, another senior pilot, tells Fritz. This immediately catches the attention of the other two senior pilots.

"Fuck you man!" The attention quickly moves off of Billy and onto Jeckle. He breathes a sigh of relief and pulls out his phone to text you.

Billy: Just got my callsign

You: aaaaand? What is it?

Billy: Fritz

You: oh! It's not that bad,it could be worse 🤷🏻‍♀️

"That's what you get for bringing a bag of glitter with you on the plane!" Jeckle shouts when Glitter gets up from his seat to wrestle him. God, Billy can't wait to go home and call you again.
