Rayne Legacy: Harvestfest pt 3
Fall, 1890:
The morning after harvestfest, May was awoken by Cecelia, the maid.
“I’m so sorry, Miss, you must come now. Mr. Fritz...well, he didn’t make it through the night. Your brother is with him now, but I thought you ought to know.”
In shock, May followed Cecelia to the carriage house where Fritz lay on the ground with Ernest crying over him. She didn’t know what to say, so she simply hugged her brother and cried with him.

Rayne Legacy: Harvestfest pt 2
After dinner was over and Mr. Whitley had left, May grabbed some leftovers and snuck out to where she knew Fritz was.
She tapped lightly on the door and was greeted by a man who looked much worse off than she had imagined.
“How are you feeling? My father told me not to come out here while you’re ill but, well, I thought you might be hungry.” She slid the plate towards him carefully.
“Thank you,” he said. He sounded weak. His voice was barely a whisper and his face was covered with bright red splotches. “I-I really appreciate it.”
May knew she should leave, but something told her Fritz needed her. So she stayed and tended to him as best she could. He was too weak to talk much, so she told him stories of her childhood and of dinner with Mr. Whitley. Although he was just listening, May found herself feeling closer to him through these stories. She told him things she hadn’t told anyone before, and she trusted that he wouldn’t judge her too harshly.
Before long, Fritz had finished his food and fallen asleep. Content with all she had done, May went back to the house to get some sleep.

Rayne Legacy: Venting
Summer, 1890:
Still angry from the fight with her mother, May took a jog to calm down. After about a mile, she noticed a familiar man sitting on a bench.
“Mr. Hatfield? What are you doing over here?”
“I needed a break from the house,” Fritz said with a laugh, “your family is incredibly generous for giving me a place to stay, but this is my only day off and I thought I’d get some space.”
“Oh, of course, I’m awfully sorry to have bothered you! I’ll just be on my way then,” she replied, feeling a bit taken aback but trying not to take it too personally.
“Nonsense! Come sit with me, I would love your company.”
Trying her best to hide the blush she felt coming on, she sat next to him.
“What’s on your mind? If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were angry with me…”
“Not with you,” she replied with a slight smile. “Look, if I tell you, do you promise not to blab to Ernest? I love my brother dearly, but he’s always on my parents’ side.”
“You have my word. I had my own squabble with your brother today, I know how he can be.”
“Oh!” She exclaimed, surprised...she thought those two were thick as thieves. Knowing that someone else could see Ernest’s good side and bad side made her feel comfortable enough to tell him of her entire conversation with her mother.
“It’s just so frustrating,” she said after she’d finished. “I do want to have children someday, but I’m not ready yet. It’s as if this is her only goal in life!”
“I understand. I moved a continent away from my family to avoid the pressure and find something more worthy of my time.”
“You don’t want to get married? Ever?”
“I do! It just has to be the right person, someone I love, y’know?” He glanced over at her and May was suddenly aware of just how close they were sitting.
“I must be off,” she said, blushing. “I promised Alice I would go play cards with her today.”
She sped off before giving him time to properly explain herself. She wasn’t sure how she felt about the whole situation, but she was sure of one thing: everyone in this town was much too concerned with love and marriage.
