Johann Jacob Froberger
I decided to post more of my recordings :) Unfortunately, there is a lot of noise in this one, I played this at a piano exam and it was recorded with my phone. Originally I wanted to play this on the harpsichord, but it was a piano exam, so it was not allowed :( I tried to be as historic as it is possible on a 3 meters long Steinway :)) Johann Jakob Froberger is a great composer, I wish I could hear his works at concerts. It is worth to check his pieces. Have a nice Easter Sunday for everyone who celebrates it :)

For this day, I choose a piece by Johann Jakob Froberger (1616-1667), a German Baroque composer. His music was studied by J. S. Bach and many other late Baroque composers. Froberger established the classic Allemande-Courante-Sarabande-Gigue order for the movements of the Baroque suite, and wrote several keyboard works which can be considered masterpieces. The programmatic titles and resemblances to lute music in his harpsichord works could be the influences of French Baroque composers, which will be the topic of tomorrow’s post. Alina Rotaru is a Romanian harpsichordist, who also studied piano and choral conducting before studying harpsichord in Germany. She recorded some of the toccatas and suites of Froberger, and has albums with Telemann’s and Sweelinck’s compositions. The Lamento (full title: Lamento sopra la dolorosa perdita della Real Maestá di Ferdinando IV, Ré di Romani, etc., roughly translates to Lamentation over the painful loss of his Majesty King Ferdinand the 4th, King of Romans etc.) is the first piece from the suite nr. XII in C major. The suite consists of the following movements: Lamento, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue. I love how the dotted rhythms and slowly moving, low bass notes and suspended chords create a meditative feeling, and the way the form is shaped by loosely connected musical ideas following each other remind me how a person contemplates grief and loss. At the end of the Lamento, we can hear a C-major scale, ascending from C2 to C6, probably symbolizing the ascension of a soul to Heaven.
