Mintflower makes a declaration...
The small but respected leader fluttered in front of her followers, the number of which had steadily grown since she and her mate threw the clan together.
“Today is a great day!” she declared in her high-otiched voice.
The dragons murmured among themselves for a moment, discussing what they already knew and mumbling about what perhaps they did not.
Mintflower continued on, “Today We have four new clanmates, two breeding pairs. They will help us acquire treasure by reproducing beautiful little babies for us. Of course, we will keep one of their first litter as is protocol for all of us.”
THe dragons nodded, looking to the newest dragons, who stood at the back of the group. They all had already met, but now the parents were remaining close to their incubating clutches instead of socializing very much.
Brackenrose looked troubled and finally spoke up, “Is that really right?”
“What is wrong with it?” Mintflower challenged.
Brackenrose said nothing, but Mintflower noticed her daughter, Frogclaw whisper something to the dragoness she knew her to prefer. She’d have to speak with her daughter later, privately.
“In other news,” Mintflower went on, “Swiftfang and Fernfrost have agreed to betrothal. As their markings correspond, it has been decided that they too shall be one of our high breeding pairs.”
The dragons happily congratulated the two little dragons, still hatchlings, and they noticed they sat together, unsure of what was happening, but feeling a sense of excitement as the clan urged them onward in this path.
Duskfall nodded, happy about the news of his daughter, though it could be seen that Brackenrose was not nearly as thrilled. Still, he gave a few words, “I look forward to my kin to come!”
Darkpool, added, “As do we all!”
Mintflower looked to their food pile and said in a celebratory fashion, “Let us feast!”
Frogclaw could not help but ask...
“What will you do once they hatch?” to the large, bright colored dragon.
Brackenrose blinked her relatively small eyes at the little dragon, the one who looked more like her than her own mother, and replied, “I do not know.”
The three eggs were nestled in the rocks, cool water flowing around them.
“Will you join Papa and go fight?” Frogclaw asked with much anticipation.
“I doubt it,” came the deep, but feminine voice.
“Why?” the childish response came.
“Well, we need someone to defend those of us who hang back, do we not?”
Frogclaw was silent a moment as she considered this and then answered, “I guess you’re right, but-,” but she was cut off.
“What’re you doing here?” Duskfall asked. He was small and fae like her mother, but he was the father of Brackenrose’s clutch.
“I’m talking to Brackenrose,” Frogclaw responded.
“Why?” he asked, “Shouldn’t your mother be training you to take on her duties when you’re grown?”
“I don’t like that,” Frogclaw told him, “I want to be like Blueleaf!”
He snorted in disgust, “Insubordinate hatchling, you need to listen to your leader and mother!”
Frogclaw glared at him but knew better than to argue. She stomped away and muttered under her breath, “I wish Brackenrose were my mother,” and she added to herself, “and not you as my father, still Blueleaf!”
Frogclaw glared at the piece of coral...
It was mocking her, it was about to strike, but she had to make the first move! She waggled her hindquarters and then pounced with cat-like reflexes pulsing ready to go. Warrior’s blood pulsed through her body, she knew, no matter what her mother insisted.
She bit into the piece of coral, it grinding against her stone solid baby teeth. She forced her jaws as closed as they could go before the piece of coral slid from between them and flew away, propelled by the force of her will.
She held her head high; the enemy had fled!
“Frogclaw,” a dreary voice came, “what are you doing?”
She looked back to see Blizzardshade approaching along with Morningwing.
Morningwing giggled, “You look so silly playing by yourself like that.”
Excited, Frogclaw invited them, “Won’t you play with me? We can battle all over the seas just like Papa and Petalflutter and Roansplash!”
The hatchlings exchanged glances. Morningwing rolled her eyes and Blizzardshade chuckled.
“What?” Frogclaw asked.
“That won’t be our duties,” Blizzardshade reminded her.
Morningwing added, “As daughter to the deputy, I’ll be training to take lead when there’s doubt or lack of command.”
Blizzardshade nodded and added, “Which, let’s face it, will be all the time if you’re really going to succeed Mintflower.”
Frogclaw wrinkled her nose, “Shut up! I don’t want to be like her, I want to be like Blueleaf! I want to travel and fight and bring back all sorts of exciting things!”
“That’s no life,” Blizzardshade insisted, “always hurting and aching and worried you might get killed off....”
“You’re just a weak coward!” Frogclaw declared and turned and pranced away from her peers, looking for something else to do.
Blizzardshade and Morningwing exchanged worried glances.
A little spindly dragon lay curled around two of her offspring
"Mama," the female hatchling squeaks, "tell us how this came to be." The far creature blinks and says to her daughter and son "well frogclaw, once upon a time I met I large dragon near the sea, one who shared my passion of the waves and scent of sea salt. That would be your father, Blueleaf, and he and I created this great clan together. Dragons have come and gone and will continue to do so, as they will be born and die. But the important thing is that I will always be here for you, to lead the way no matter what challenges may face us." The hatchlings, who looked more like their father in physique, were wide eyed and speechless. Mintflower nuzzled them each and then batted her wings, aren't you hungry? We must be off to obtain some insects not, come along children!" And off they went in search of something delicious. But Frogclaw wasn't satisfied. She looked over her shoulder knowing her father was out battling with two other clan mates, Roansplash and Petalflutter. She could only imagine what that was like, how exciting and adventurous!! They spent most of the days doing that, bringing home goodies to eat and hoard as well as great stories to share and ignite the little ones imagination. But for now she simply followed her mother. The dragon she wasn't sure she wanted to be.
