“‘Swag’ is an acceptable term to use in modern day society.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Explain your answer. [6 Marks]
According to Know Your Meme “Swag is an internet slang term often found in comments, discussion forums and image macros used as a synonym for ‘swagger’, a type of style or presence that exudes confidence and is sometimes interpreted as arrogance” yet when looked up on dictionary.com Swag is defined as “a suspended wreath, garland, drapery, or the like, fastened up at or near each end and hanging down in the middle; festoon” so it is no surprise that its used in today’s media is highly debated.
Some people agree with the statement “‘Swag’ is an acceptable term to use in modern day society” for abounding advisable adducements. Swag is a word that has generated multiple meanings throughout the ages; and so if it was introduced in modern society, those many meanings would stay. It also has a debated origin. Some sources say that the word was patented in the 1960s by gay men, and that the word swag actually means ‘Secretly We Are Gay’ to the unsuspecting eye which I honestly love and if I ever get a boyfriend I am going to get us matching shirts saying that. However, a plethora of people have been using the word ‘Swag’ way before the 20th century, using it to mean many trivial things such as ‘Souvenirs, Wearables, And Gifts’, ‘Stuff We All Get’, and one of my personal favourites ‘Scientific Wild Arsed Guess’. However, the word Swag had a speculated first appearance in William Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer’s Night Dream, that was said to be wrote 1595-1596 and first performed around 1605. The line the string of alphabetical letters first appeared in is “What hempen homespuns have we swaggering here, so near the cradle of the fairy queen?” (Act 3 Scene 1) spoken by the character Puck. It is unknown whether William Shakespeare invented the word Swag because of its inclusion, but there are many other words wrote in his passages that are at the mystery of whether he made them up, or simply just was the first to write them down.
Now, some people disagree with the statement, some more strongly spoken than others. It is not surprising that hate generating around this world is shown promptly on the site Urban Dictionary. One user called “thisplacesucksass composed in their description “A word that was extremely overused from late 2010 to early 2012, and is now nothing more than a joke - This day in age, saying swag in a non-sarcastic way in public will probably just end up getting your ass beat, as it is no longer “in style”, even for preppy teenfags. The term is still used by internet trolls, and as a joke, but that’s about it”; on behalf of what they expressed I would personally like to apologies for the use of the ludacris word ‘teenfags’ as it doesn’t seem like they care about the weight carried by letters. Others have a disdain for the word because of its overuse in the media, more specifically in rap and hip-hop, appearing in songs like Jay-Z’s ‘All I Need’ and Soulja Boy Tell'em’s ‘Pretty Boy Swag’, the latter of which actually harbouring the word Swag in its title. As of its overuse, Swag has been swallowed like a tasteless pill by the forenamed cringe-culture (which is a toxic culture while I’m at it) which means many stray away from the word despite its considering origins.
Personally I do agree with the statement of “‘Swag’ is an acceptable term to use in modern day society” not just because of the reasons already discussed, but because of reasons that haven’t been discussed. Going back to Urban Dictionary, user ‘Username6021452445225′ goes into more detail about William Shakespeare’s use of the word in his literature, giving quotes to where the word appeared. Not to mention user andycidau has said that it is also the name of a “traditional Australian camp bed. Highlighted in “Waltzing Matilda” by Banjo Paterson” which proved its truth when looked up. Plus I feel like as the word doesn’t have any negative connotations, it is easy to suddenly slip back into modern forms of spoken communication, if not for a touch of comedy than anything else.
Anyway, I hope that you enjoyed this essay; these are actually really fun to do as I am able to learn so many new things! Also, the boyfriend ‘secretly we are gay’ present isn’t an idea, it’s a goddamn promise.
