Dear Sophia, today I saw your name written in black, wobbly letters surrounded by three thick bands: pink, blue, and purple crayon; trapped under a metal table leg. I don’t know if you lost it or left it, but I hope you don’t miss it.

mouthwash and other alcohols

age five: it starts in innocence; sneaking into medicine cabinets, trying not to fall of the bathroom counter / taking shots of your prize; mouthwash burning as it goes down / not knowing any better; sometimes things are off limits for a reason // age seventeen: it ends in a smoke clouded room; at party / making sure the bottle never lingers when it’s passed to you  / you’ve been burned too many times to still like the feeling of fire going down your throat

Formation

lose sticky sand, the wrong mixture of water and earth cover your hands, the lasts of the day’s light casting everything in red (but it feels like gold). and the fire is already started, giving your castle it’s own smoke filled air, while someone, somewhere (your group or another you can’t say) blasts some Top 40 from a phone speaker. when you finally lose the sun and the day is done, you think maybe, for you it might just be starting, think that this  could be something. and then she leans, the castle falling (but you don’t mind) and her lips touch yours and you have your answer.

regarding being saved

i. What’s hell to a non-believer anyway? -----> Anyways no rules, no one to answer to = freedom > the promise of possible salvation?

ii. tattered wings. broken halo. hint of horns. Is it still salvation if it’s offered by a fallen angel?

iii. Say she saves you, say you let her. This late in the game? She’s also sentencing you to damnation. Because she’s leaving you with a choice: believe and burn or don’t believe and burn anyway?

How to Kill a King/Long Live the Queen

     The king might sit on the throne might wear the crown, but everyone knows the queen is the one in charge.

      And the title isn’t power but power sure as hell is title.

     And so maybe you can’t kill a king, but maybe he’s already dead.
