1. sixty misanthropes surrounding a fire, sitting on ant-ridden tarp. this feels like a movie. we are telling stories. a boy whispers his hands are cold. the summer nights are unforgivingly chilly, and we forgot our blankets. // after fitful dreams, we wake to the anticipated warmth of morning, silent with each other, wisps of our consciousness still coming back to us.
2. that was after the s’mores. after burning marshmallows, melting chocolate, sticky hands that needed water, mouths that wanted s(ome)’more. a boy, a different one, dared me to eat a flaming marshmallow. // I couldn’t taste anything the day after, my sandpaper tongue useless - it was the only time I could handle the sour of passionfruit. with my insides burnt.
3. night by land. // day by water. I think Caribbean blue might be jealous of Nairobi turquoise, purple sea urchins littering the sandy floor. another boy stepped on one. he screamed. I gave up my snorkel. I opened my eyes underwater. the fish fled. salty trails left themselves along my body as I dried on the boat ride back.
4. to the tents again, to the hyenas laughter, to restless tossing, to temperature ever-descending, we slept noisy sleeps. // only to wake up once again to our sweaty shirts sticking to our sweaty chests, our dreams clinging to our unwilling minds, dragging us away from reality.
