Under Fire

A series of drabbles based off of the wonderful @frostisass‘ gifset inspired by our ongoing WWI Gramander AU.

This is inspired by the first gif of the set.

There is a slight possibly that something had just happened between Theseus and Percival that Newt had completely missed.

Both his brother and the sergeant are staring at him in that way that people normally do when they’ve said something that he should respond to, but hasn’t. The only problem is, Newt hadn’t exactly been paying attention to the rather unnecessary alpha male posturing that had been going on between the two older males.

“Right,” Theseus says with a grin, and pushes himself up from the table.

Newt tilts his head to follow his brother’s movements, and his eyes dart over to Percival. There’s not even the slightest hint to what he may have occurred while Newt’s attention had wandered. He should, perhaps, focus more on conversations that are going on around him, especially when Percival and Theseus have both displayed an unfortunate tendency toward over-protectiveness that Newt could really rather do without.

“Good luck with that,” Theseus chuckles, slapping Percival lightly on the arm with his hat before he shoves it onto his head again. “I’ll check in in a month or two.”

An amused smirk dances over Percival’s lips at the words, but he doesn’t say anything in response.

Newt narrows his eyes and a frown tugs at his lips as he stares at Percival, trying to puzzle out just what that smirk is supposed to mean. Bugger! He really is terrible when it comes to reading people. “What?” he finally demands, his brow furrowing. “Good luck with what?”

Percival makes a soft, non-committal sound in the back of his throat. “Oh nothing,” he says lightly, turning his attention to the cup of coffee cradled in his hands. “Nothing at all.”

“You’re impossible,” Newt grumbles under his breath.

Percival only chuckles at that, though he does raise his eyes again to stare at Newt with a raised eyebrow. “Oh? I’m the impossible one am I?
