Skimming the surface

For Frozen AU week, more Wicked AU! (which, honestly, you can pretend is just boarding school AU or something for this drabble)

A... somewhat happier part of the show? Takes place in the middle of Dancing Through Life. (here's the incredibly depressing No Good Deed dabble I wrote yesterday) At least no one's presumed dead this time. Playing Hans as Boq instead of the WIzard this time. And Anna as both Nessa and Glinda.

Anna flips through the dresses in her closet. “Are you sure you don’t want to go?”

“No, Anna,” Elsa says without looking up from her book. She’s curled up on the bed, engrossed in a dusty tome, probably some history of Oz or textbook. Anna pulls out a lovely green dress, lacy sleeves and black bodice and long pleated skirt. She holds it to herself and poses in front of the mirror.“Oh come on! It’ll be fun!” 

“If by ‘fun’, you mean boring and possibly painful, then yes. Lots of ‘fun’.”

Anna shakes her head, but she’s getting used to her sister’s sarcasm. She tries one last tactic - “Everyone in school will be there, Elsa. You’ll be the only one in Shiz, sitting here in the room, all alone.”

“Everyone,” Elsa deadpans, flipping a page. 

“Everyone,” Anna confirms.

“How about the new Winkie boy… whatshisname….”

“Kristoff?” Anna scrunches her nose, like she’s named something disgusting. Elsa raises an eyebrow, finally looking up from the book.

“What was that? You mean to say you’re not one of his adoring fans?”

“Pfffft. As if!” The idea is clearly unthinkable to Anna. She turns to Elsa with the dress. “What do you think of this one?”

“Fine,” Elsa says lazily, back to the book. 

“Elsaaaaaa.”

Her sister obliges and lifts her eyes. Looks the dress over once. Twice. “Hmm,” she muses. "Hmmmmmmm." Anna is distressed. 

“It’s bad, isn’t it?” Elsa says nothing, but continues staring intently. Anna whirls around, hiding the dress from her view. “You’re right, you’re right, it’s awful!” She returns it to the closet and resumes her hunt, now more frantic. 

Elsa laughs, unable to keep a straight face any longer. “Anna. It’s beautiful. Wear it.”

Anna pauses, narrows her eyes at Elsa. “You mean it?”

“I mean it,” Elsa promises. “Come on, I’ll help you get ready. Anna beams and lays the dress out on her bed while she starts undressing. Elsa bookmarks the book and clambers out of the bed.

“Okay, but you should still go to the dance,” Anna says when she can’t stand the silence any longer, probably about fifteen seconds. Which might be a record for her, Elsa thinks. “Ooh! You could go with Kristoff.”

“I thought you hated him.”

“I hate him for me. But you guys have so much in common! He’s uh…” Anna grabs the dress, starts to climb into it, if only to buy herself time to think. “…studious! And… punctual! And…”

“Boring?” Elsa helps her tug the dress on and starts to lace the back of the bodice.

“That—is not the word I was going to use. ..but a word for it, yes.”

“I am not going to the dance,” Elsa repeats, pulling a little too tightly on the laces. “And I am especially not going with the Winkie prince. I’d rather go with Hans.”

“What’s wrong with Hans?” Anna asks innocently. Now it’s Elsa’s turn to make the disgusted face.

“He’s vile. Have you talked to him? He’s not the same kid we grew up with.”

“He’s not the same kid you grew up with cause you didn’t see him after—“ Anna checks herself, but they both know how the sentence ends. After we were separated. Elsa ties off the bodice lacing and just stands silently behind her sister. The silence is oppressive, so Anna continues, but the unfinished sentence hangs over them. “i just… I saw a lot more of him growing up than you did, and he was--he's always been good to me. Plus it's nice to have another familiar face around here, you know?”

“You don’t have class with him," Elsa shakes her head. "You don’t hear the things he says—about Animals and Trolls and Snowmen—“

“You’re condemning him because he’s not an Animal rights activist?” Anna asks incredulously.

“Of course not, but you haven’t heard—“

“I can take care of myself, Elsa.”

“I’m not saying you can’t, I’m just saying you need to think these things through.”

“He asked me to the dance,” Anna blurts. 

“No.”

Elsa realizes she’s overreacted. That in her head 'no' meant what do you mean he asked you? but it came out as no you’re not allowed to go with him. But even though it came out wrong she doesn’t want to take it back. Anna can only stand there, stunned, trying to form words. 

“Wait, what?” she finally manages. “What do you mean, ‘no’?”

Elsa tries not to give ground. She doesn’t want to smother or control Anna, but she does not approve and she’s not going to sit idly by while Anna makes a stupid decision. “You shouldn’t go with him.”

“Well,” Anna sniffs. “That’s your opinion.”

“He’s trouble, Anna. He’s no good,” Elsa insists. Anna’s not listening, though. She’s gathering her things. “What are you doing?”

“I should get going,” Anna says. The dance isn’t for hours, though, and Elsa knows she just wants to leave. She doesn’t blame her, honestly, but the whole situation still hurts. 

“Anna,” Elsa sighs, but this too comes out wrong, it comes out like she’s exasperated with Anna—which, okay, she is—but mostly she just doesn’t know how to talk to her sister anymore and it frustrates her. She doesn’t know what else to say, and Anna’s at the door before she can stop her.

“I’ll see you later,” Anna mumbles in the doorway. She pauses and Elsa thinks she’s going to stay and talk some more, but the moment passes and she’s gone, the door still hanging open behind her. Elsa sighs again, sitting on the bed.

Why was this so hard?

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

For Frozen AU Week prompt... books? I guess Other, since this is clearly the musical. Also I'm sorry I keep breaking Elsa. I'll write a happy followup to this, I swear.

Here's the song I'm referencing for those unfamiliar with Wicked. Or for anyone really, because that is an especially fabulous version.

Let Arendelle be agreed: I'm wicked through and through since I could not succeed, Anna, saving you.

“They should be here by now,” Elsa says to no one in particular, pacing the cavernous entrance hall of the old castle. Olaf sits patiently against the stone wall, poking at his foot with his stick arms. 

“I’m sure they’re fine,” the Snowman promises. Elsa glares at him, like he’s intruding on her privacy. He doesn’t seem to mind, though. He’s been watching Elsa pace for hours now. They arrived in the castle the previous night, after leading the Wizard’s guards away from Kristoff and Anna a dozen miles north of the mountain, then doubling back in the cover of a cloudy night. 

Kristoff and Anna should’ve had ample time to get here. Even if they had waited all night, it was only half a day’s journey on foot. They should’ve made it by midday. Elsa looks out at the moon, full and bright, bright enough to guide the paths of any travelers. Where are they? 

“We could go outside and look for them?” Olaf suggests. Elsa shakes her head. 

“No, we can’t let anyone know we’re here—“ Look for them. Elsa stops pacing. Olaf notices and watches her intently. Without warning, she bolts across the room and up the stairs. The Snowman jumps up and waddles after her as fast as he can.

When he’s reached her, she’s in a room on the second floor, kneeling next to a huge crystal ball. The Grimmerie is open on the ground, and Elsa is muttering to herself, waving her hands over the crystal. Lights flicker in its depths. It comes to life with swirling colors that start to form themselves into recognizable shapes. Elsa gives a triumphant “Hah!” Her face lights up—finally magic does something good for a change—but instantly falls in horror.

The scene is murky. She can’t make out all the details. His shirt - is the fabric red or have they just stained it with his blood? Are those bruises or cuts or scrapes or something else entirely mottling his arms? Elsa falls away from the crystal and the gruesome state of Kristoff. He’s strung up on a pole, arms stretched out and tied to a crossbeam. Figures ring around him, but she can’t make out anything about them. They hold - swords? Canes? Spears? She can’t tell. She lets out another little cry as they strike him again.

He’s captured. And if he’s captured—Elsa’s trying not to think what this means for Anna. Trying not to think of Hans alone with her sister, of the dagger he pulled and how early he took Elsa’s life with it, and would he try the same thing on Anna--Elsa forces herself not to think these things and flips through the pages of the book. 

Olaf doesn’t know what to say. He trundles into the room and plants himself next to Elsa. One of his stick arms awkwardly pats her back, the most comfort he can offer, and Elsa doesn’t object as she frantically searches for a spell. She squints, tries to read the runes on the page—“Eleka”—she stammers, “eleka nahmen nahmen ah tum ah tum eleka nahmen”—she chants over and over. Don’t let them hurt him, don’t let them kill him, keep her safe, keep her safe, don’t let them die don’t let them die don’t let them die don’t let them—

The crystal changes suddenly. Elsa stops chanting with a gasp. The figures stop hitting Kristoff. He hangs limply, and Elsa’s heart stops don’t die DON’T DIE DON’T— but then he lifts his head and Elsa starts breathing again. 

But Anna—Anna. Elsa is shaking at the thought of Anna captured, Anna being tortured—Elsa feels sick, and if she’d been able to eat anything this last day she knows it would be on the floor, her stomach is wringing itself, rebelling against her. She does not want to see this, but she has to look, she has to know if she wants to save her.

Elsa mumbles the spell to change her focus, casts about near Kristoff to find Anna, but the crystal refuses to change. Location and person, she remembers from her classes. She holds Anna firmly in her mind. Location--she would be with Krstoff, somewhere near Kristoff. They would be captured together. Elsa says the spell and waves her hands, but the crystal stays stuck on Kristoff. Elsa shouts in frustration, throwing her hands down.

One of the men is pointing to something out of her line of sight. Elsa crawls around to see the side of the crystal better. That’s when she notices, for the first time, that there is a second pole next to Kristoff. There were meant to be two people here. The palace guard points at it and shouts. Kristoff turns his head away, as though he can’t stand to look at it. Elsa could only make out indistinct shouting, but pointing guard’s words come through clearly—

“—do you want to end up like her—“

Elsa shatters. 

A terrible, guttural cry escapes her. No, is the only coherent thought she can manage. No no Anna no please no NO ANNA NO and she can’t tell what’s in her head and what she’s screaming to the empty halls of the castle ANNA PLEASE NO

The Snowman watches. He does not approach Elsa this time. He does not try to comfort her. There is no comfort. She curls on the ground, sobbing, heaving, shouting loud enough for a whole castle to hear. He feels her sadness. He feels her pain. She made him, after all. She made him a Snowman, not just a snowman, and her feelings are his. 

He watches the scene continue to play out in the crystal. The guards leave Kristoff, taking their torches, and leaving him alone in the moonlight. It reflects brightly off of him. Olaf didn’t remember him being so pale, or skin shining so bright under just the moon, but the crystal fades to black before he can spend too much time thinking about it. Elsa’s crying is slowing. She’s spent. She lies on the floor limp, looking almost dead herself. 

“I’m through,” Elsa croaks. Her voice is raw. Olaf looks to her, and her to him, because they have no one else. “I tried to do the right thing. I tried to be good.” Her hand curls into a fist. “No more.”

No One Mourns the Wicked

I wanted to write an outline so I could pick one scene to write for AU week... what happened instead was I wrote a frakking huge outline so I'm posting that instead. I'm still not satisfied with it, so if anyone wants to improve upon it, please feel free. I wanted to combine the Wizard and Boq, since Hans fits so well for both of them, but it didn't turn out so well.

Also for some reason I felt the need to stick really close to the musical and include the musical numbers?? I dunno.

The people of Arendelle rejoice that the Snow Queen is dead. Anna starts to yell at them all that her sister was not evil, but checks herself, and instead tries to calmly explain that they haven’t heard Elsa’s side of the story.

Anna and Elsa are sisters and real close until Elsa accidentally strikes Anna with magic. Anna recovers, and is mostly okay, but is sometimes weak and can’t quite keep up with Elsa after that. Their parents separate them. Their father is the governor of Munchkinland/Arendelle. Their parents die in an accident, though, and they’re sent to boarding school by their relatives who know nothing about the magic. (No One Mourns the Wicked/Dear Old Shiz)

When they get to school, Madame Morrible (Bulda?) discovers Elsa’s magic and tells her she’s fabulous and maybe someday she can meet the Wizard. (The Wizard and I) Elsa’s relieved that her magic is not evil like she thought. Anna also takes magic classes with Elsa because she wants to be with Elsa, but they’re still distant and don’t know how to act around each other anymore. (What Is This Feeling?) They try to get along, but it’s awkward. When they’re around other people, all Anna hears is how talented Elsa is, and all Elsa hears is how personable and nice Anna is, and they both feel like outcasts.

Meanwhile, Elsa’s favorite professor, Pabbie, is a Troll, but is losing his magic. (Something Bad) They’re not sure why, and Elsa thinks maybe the Wizard can help.

There’s a new transfer student, Kristoff Bjorgman. He’s from the Vinkus, the mountain region of Arendelle. He’s quiet and surly, but handsome, so all the girls try to talk to him. He’d rather be by himself, though. Anna, unlike the other girls, thinks he’s boring and needs to loosen up a lot. This however turns Kristoff onto Anna, and he asks her to the ball. (Dancing Through Life) Anna wants to ask Elsa before going, so she tells him maybe. Elsa wants nothing to do with the ball, however, and they get into an argument. Anna reveals that Kristoff asked her. Elsa doesn’t approve, so Anna goes with him just to spite her. Elsa won’t go, but changes her mind after the ball has already started and shows up just in time to overhear people making fun of her. She’s going to just leave, when Anna busts in and yells at all of them and then storms off dragging Elsa along behind her. (more Dancing Through Life)

They go back to their room, Elsa apologizes for being overbearing, Anna apologizes for not listening to her. Elsa asks how Anna is so good with people and Anna tries to explain but she doesn’t know how and it doesn’t really make any sense. (Popular) They bond over the whole ordeal though, and now they’re inseparable around school.

Pabbie is suddenly replaced with a new professor (The Duke of Weselton?) who brings in a Snowman (Marshmallow) in a cage. Elsa is outraged and frees the Snowman. He promptly starts to melt, but she creates a flurry for him with her ice magic and he runs away. Now there’s a wild Snowman on the loose though, and everyone’s pretty freaked out by Elsa. She runs out of class. Kristoff follows her, says he’s really impressed. His family is from real high in the mountains, so he is also a Snowpeople-rights activist, and is likewise outraged by the cage. He sort of flirts with Elsa, but she does not want any of it so she runs off and he is sad. (I’m Not That Girl)

Elsa and Anna are doing so well in classes, they get to go to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard. (I kinda forget what happens between I’m Not That Girl and One Short Day oops) Elsa feels bad for rejecting Kristoff before so she invites him along as a friend. The three of them go to the city and have a grand old time. (One Short Day) Then they go to meet the Wizard, who is Hans. He is impressed with Elsa’s magic and wants to work with her. (A Sentimental Man) He reveals another Snowman in a freezer cage--but no, this one is a snowman, lowercase. It can’t talk. Hans asks Elsa to use her magic to make him be able to walk around outside the cage. Elsa does. Hans reveals his army of snowmen and Elsa is outraged. Hans won’t let her leave, though, and sics the snowmen on her. The snowman that Elsa just freed is Olaf, and is now a Snowman. He convinces the snowmen not to attack Elsa and she gets away.

Anna finds Elsa running away and follows her. Elsa doesn’t want to drag Anna and Kristoff into the business with the Wizard, so she tries to tell Anna to leave. Elsa says she’s through with Arendelle and she’s running away. Anna says she’ll go with her. Elsa reluctantly agrees, but then leaves when Anna’s distracted. (Defying Gravity) The snowmen, led by Olaf, wander out of the palace and inadvertently scare the people of the Emerald City. (eventually they wander back into the palace) Hans blames the whole thing on Elsa, but then confides in Anna that he doesn’t think Elsa is bad and asks Anna to go after her. Anna is instantly smitten with Hans, and agrees to whatever he asks.

  Anna still hasn’t found her sister. The people of Arendelle are now convinced that Elsa is completely evil. Kristoff has to constantly stop Anna from losing her temper with people about it. (Thank Goodness) Since she’s had no luck finding Elsa, she goes back to Munchkinland to take over as governor now that she’s finished school and come of age. She’s a good leader. Everyone likes her and forgets that she’s related to Elsa since they were raised separately. One day there’s a riot about something they think Elsa did. Anna tries to control it but it gets out of hand. Elsa gets wind of it and shows up in Munchkinland to protect her sister, and Hans likewise shows up to either win over or kill Elsa. Anna still doesn’t know Hans is evil and takes him to Elsa. He feigns innocence and asks Elsa to join him, which she refuses. He takes out a dagger and is going to kill her, but Elsa strikes him with ice magic and freezes his heart. He starts to turn to ice. She’s horrified - she hadn’t meant to kill him - and tries to reverse the spell. She manages to keep him alive, but now he’s like a living ice statue. No ones knows he tried to kill her, so Elsa gets even more blame. Even Anna doesn’t understand. Hans orders every soldier in Arendelle to hunt her down, and he returns to the Emerald City. Anna begs Hans to let her talk to Elsa first, but he refuses. Anna realizes Elsa was right about him all along and runs away to warn her sister. Hans has Olaf follow Anna.

  Madame Morrible finds Elsa and tries to convince her to go back to the Emerald City and make up for what she’s done. Elsa feels awful for what happened to Hans, and is almost willing to go, but Olaf shows up and tells her the terrible things Hans has been up to and that he’s using Anna right now. Elsa finds Kristoff, who is also looking for Anna. Anna sees them together and realizes suddenly that she loves Kristoff but thinks he’s in love with Elsa. (I’m Not That Girl reprise) The three of them reunite. (oh and Olaf too!) Elsa tells them the whole story behind Hans. Kristoff says he has a castle on the North Mountain that they can hide in. Hans’s soldiers show up and Elsa insists they split up to keep the other two safe. She and Olaf fly off to the castle and draw the soldiers away. Now alone, Kristoff and Anna eventually realize they’re in love with each other. (As Long As You’re Mine) But Hans was after Kristoff and Anna all along, because he knows they’re Elsa’s weak point. The soldiers show up and capture both of them.

Elsa makes it to the castle, but has a bad feeling. She uses a spell to see what’s happening, but it doesn’t work very well. She sees Kristoff being tortured and tries a spell that will save him, but stops when she sees something that makes her think Anna is dead. (No Good Deed) This destroys her, she declares that she won’t try to be good anymore.

Really, Kristoff has helped Anna to escape, and this is why he’s being tortured. The people still don’t know Hans has been turned to ice, so he sneaks out as the ice man and starts riots and leads a group to kill Elsa. With him is Marshmallow, who has been a coward since Elsa freed him. Anna races to warn Elsa. (March of the Witch Hunters)

Kristoff is in fact, not dead. Elsa’s spell worked to stop the pain and save his life, but turns him into a Snowman. He follows the group. Elsa and Anna separately reflect on their relationship and how they wish they had saved each other, and how each was the best thing in the other’s life. (For Good) Hans and Marshmallow show up to kill Elsa. Marshmallow however has no desire to kill Elsa once he realizes she’s the person who freed him. Hans dispatches Marshmallow. Elsa mentions Anna’s death. Hans knows Anna is still alive, but plays along and blames her ‘death’ on Elsa. Elsa is done with Hans’s lies though, and refuses to believe this and fights back. Hans has her cornered when Anna runs in front of the sword. But the spell Elsa put on her shoes protects her. They fight Hans together, but Hans finally ‘kills’ Elsa. (throwing water on her I guess?) There is a commotion outside. Kristoff has arrived, with the big mob from the Emerald City which has now grown. Anna threatens to reveal Hans as the WIzard, and all the things he’s done. He tries to kill her, but Elsa’s protection spell still works. She orders him to leave Arendelle forever or she will reveal him. He reluctantly agrees, and Anna lets him go tell the mob that the Snow Queen is dead. She tries to tell them that Elsa wasn’t actually evil, but they don’t listen to her.

Kristoff comes in, and they mourn Elsa - until she pops up from a trapdoor. She faked her death, and is now planning to run away from Arendelle forever. Anna and Kristoff insist on going with her, and this time, Elsa doesn’t object. The people celebrate her ‘death’, but the three of them and the two Snowmen leave together to start a new life. (Finale)
