i feel the song "brutus" fit pete and fruit's relationship pretty well (at least from fruit's mcc debut to post-mcc 17 imo)
like the way i could imagine fruit admiring pete at first (headcanon that pete is mcc's sweetheart and probably most impactful of the skaters in mcc due to his skating style; plus pete was part of hbg at the time so they were campmates and friends!) but then growing into resentment (since fruit is younger than pete and TECHNICALLY he is superior--in terms of having more quads and higher GOE) as he knows he doesn't have the same impact/effect on the crowd as pete does
the standing ovations and the praise from the commentators merely further fruit's resentment; fruit could break every record in the book and pete could only be jumping triples, and yet pete would STILL be more remembered than fruit
and to fruit, who is still relatively young (at the time) and new to the mcc scene, he doesn't get it. he thinks it's unfair.

fruit won a team gold in mcc6 (which is AMAZING for his debut!) and mcc9, and had some individual medals along the way, but he hit a ROUGH slump (kept training quads) from mcc11-15 and pete kept doing well individually
pete's season-ending injury in mcc15 would spark mixed feelings from fruit (one: it's a SERIOUS injury and pete ends up taking nearly the ENTIRE mcc16 season off, so obv fruit doesn't want him to be seriously hurt/lose his skating skills; two: it opens a door for fruit to take up a spot and have a higher chance at medalling individually) -> fruit would feel guilty for this, but he also rationalizes this by saying that pete is older and fruit is merely further pushing himself into contention
this leads to fruit and grian teaming once more in mcc16 (fruit and grian teamed up in mcc11 but didn't win)! in mcc16 they grow closer and become friends!
fruit knows that their team will have a shot at gold but he pushes grian too far in competition (they do a quad throw jump when grian is only comfortable with triples) and grian ends up falling (hard), spooking fruit and making pete panic (pete competes in mcc16 and is put on a non-comp team in order to help ease him back into skating as he's still recovering and lost his quads at the moment -> ends up placing 12th individually!)
grian's fine and they're able to finish the program but their team gold chances are SHOT. grian is frustrated with himself because he lost out on a team gold AGAIN (silver and bronze with pete in mcc13 and 14 respectively) and he believes it's HIS OWN fault because he bailed on that throw. fruit ends up earning an individual bronze the week after but he realizes that pushing for technical perfection isn't the way to go

mcc17 rolls around and fruit gets teamed with illumina, vixella, and zeuz. fruit and illumina would pair up for the pairs free and end up breaking records and YET pete and grian still win over them, sealing the team gold for orange (pete and grian's PCS are MUCH higher and their TES has the gap closed enough for the PCS to close the rest)
and pete would end up winning the individual event over fruit as well, which actually makes fruit frustrated with himself (again, PCS close the gap enough) as he achieved a personal best.
he ends up breaking down following the medal ceremony (fruit earned two silvers!) and pete finds him. and this is where they finally talk out their insecurities about each other.
they end up making up and eventually, fruit is among the top skaters in the mcc circuit alongside the rest of fb trio (yes, the three of them will be podium sweep threats), purpled, jojo, and hannah!
