– “CALLIE,” EVA LAUGHS, GRIPPING HER FRIEND’S ARM FOR A MOMENT. “ i am just too restless to walk alongside you right now. ” eva is full of warmth and laughter, it’s been a good night and she has a habit of trusting people more when they have masks on than when they have them off. in her other hand is a half-empty bottle of merlot that she’d saved for special occasions, maybe to share with a friend after a long night, and it feels good to forget about her most clamoring obsessions, to spend a couple moments where she isn’t wondering what cole conner is up to and if he can be trusted at all ( he can’t. ) “ i HAVE to run ! ” she giggles, lifting calypso’s hand to her lips in a princely kiss before she drops it, tearing off down the corridor with the wind in her hair.

The hallway finally came back into space. Cassiopeia reeled back the way she did when things hit a little harder all of a sudden. When she thought no one was looking. A hiccup. A pause. A memory. The things she packed away with her collegiate rodeo gear and old journals—kept out of daylight, far from her family's reach.

She had no idea Calypso could see her from her seat in their childhood living room. The tunnel vision made sure of that. Cassie had stopped just shy of stepping into the room; catching her sister's eye, she dipped her head to glance down the front of her tank. Her hand lifted smoothly to her sternum, brushing away a piece of lint that wasn't there, like she could erase her misstep with it. A smile beamed across her face when she looked up and crossed the threshold. The expression stretched over her truth, wrapped in coverup and warmth. Her voice curled around it all like a sickly sweet ribbon. "Oh—Hi Cal, sweet girl! What are you up to?"
