Mattie tapped on the back of her phone as she waited for her coffee, between long shifts at work and the nightmares that plagued her sleep when she managed to get to sleep. Mattie jumped when she felt a tap on her shoulder, she turned quickly, her heart jumping before she realized it was just her father. "Oo, sorry Dad, you scared me," she said. "Getting coffee before work too?"
He should have known better than to come up behind Mattie, but too many changes in his routine left the elf running on automatic. Adílson offered an apologetic smile. "Don't apologize, Mattie." Not a scolding, the words landed with a gentle steadiness. "I shouldn't have snuck behind you like that. And no, I'm not drinking coffee this week. I grabbed one of these for your mother—" He briefly held up a bag of the house's whole beans. "—and I'm waiting for a scone. ... Will you be done with work on time today? I'm making your favorite for dinner."
Campbell smiled brightly as her sister entered the room, "You're just in time," she said, "Grayson is sorting out our discharge papers so you get to see her in her cute going-home outfit," she elaborated. Cam stepped away from her packing their go bag to pick up their daughter out of the crib, "Cassiopeia, this is Courtney Celeste, or Cici for short."

"Knock knock." Cassie's voice rang sweetly into the room, her knuckles tapping lightly against the door as she poked her head through. She smiled at the sight of her sister packing, and the expression only widened when Campbell looked up. The fairy's body buzzed with nervous excitement as she carefully approached. "Hi..." Cassie's attention drifted from her sister's smile down to their newest, and tiniest, family member. How was it possible that she could already see traces of her sister in such a small, wrinkled being? "Cam, she's beautiful." The words came out an awed whisper. Her posture softened as she hovered near her sister, looking back with soft admiration in her gaze. She scoffed lightly, a happy, gentle sound. "And you—" You're the happiest I've ever seen you. "—you're glowing, Campbell. You really are."

"Did you just Dad me?" Georgie asked with a raise of her eyebrows. "You should know by now that if you tell me I shouldn't do something, makes me want to do it more, even if you didn't mean to say I shouldn't do something. Is it really because you want to do it?"
Marcello took her rebuttal in stride, his unbothered calm holding steady under her persistent teasing. There was no spark of concern, no lecture waiting—just the faint, amused exhale he reserves for when she's being very her. "Mija," he said, tone flat but not unkind. "I'm not telling you anything. I'm just saying what I'm saying. My neighbor's alarm being broken doesn't bother me, so I don't see a reason to bother him about it." His eyes shifted from the television screen to his daughter, a small shrug telling how little weight he put on the subject. "If you want to do it, do it. I'll thank you for the favor."

A habit, a horrible habit if Leighton said so herself. Something she did since she was dragged out of her foster home all those years ago, look for her sister in everyone she saw. However, the girl waiting for her coffee looking eerily like an older version of the girl Leighton once knew. She thought to go up to her, step out of the shadows and see if it was right. Her brain had played tricks on her before, it wouldn't be the first time Leighton was mistaken. She was so focused on the other that Leighton almost missed it, her own name being called. She shook the feeling, telling herself it wasn't her, and stepped around the other to grab the coffee the barista slid onto the counter for her.
Loretta wasn't the type to keep her head buried in her phone—at least, not usually. But her life had taken a turn, and her routines were still shaken. She wouldn't have been in the café at this hour had she not ruined her sleep schedule over the past week, and her luck had dropped her into the middle of a busy crowd. The witch was barely listening to the names coming from behind the counter, her sleep-slogged attention glued to the bookstore's new inventory list for the day. She glanced up when someone moved past, her arm brushing theirs as the morning crowd shifted. The split-second glimpse was enough to spark a familiar jolt in her chest. Loretta's jaw dropped despite herself—slack for a second before she caught it, straightening as the other woman turned back around.
Was she dreaming? Her tired mind had conjured her sister before. "I... Are you... real?"
