-A/N: This is the rewritten version of OnOff! I changed a lot of things so I hope you enjoy this chapter! ENJOYY:)
“A singer!” your five-year old self gleefully smiles at your teacher with your chubby hands clasped together in a dreamy-like way.
Your teacher gives you a warm smile as she writes down ‘SINGER’ in big fat letters on your assignment sheet.
“Well, Y/N. I’m sure you’ll be a wonderful singer. Contact me when you become famous!”
Things didn’t always go your way. Sure, you had huge aspirations to become a singer since you were three years old, but you soon realized that you weren’t meant for the stage. You didn’t loudly boast about the new barbie doll you got for your birthday and hated being the center of attention when it was time for show and tell.
Plus, you were H O R R I B L E at singing. After the last year of middle school, you finally decided that you would have to give up your dream of becoming a singer that would be able to move a person to tears.
Your life didn’t take much of a turn after giving up that dream, since you always kept up with your studies.
Giving up your childhood dream of singing, you were determined to study harder, go into a great college, get a job, start a happy little family, and not worry about finances.
Surprisingly, it went exactly as you had planned.
Besides the family and finances part.
You made friends quite easily in high school. One of the closest friends you had went by the name Choi Dayoon.
She had the dream of becoming a successful business woman during her years of high school, but in her third year, she suddenly gave up studying and pursued singing.
It was a sudden and risky decision. One that her parents were obviously against, but her perseverance and work ethic eventually made them give in.
You always envied her singing abilities and cheered her on when she had first passed an audition and entered an agency.
During the time she was busy preparing for her debut stage, you were busy going through university, graduating, and getting a decently paying job at an office building. It required you to move out of your small town and into the big streets of Seoul.
You weren’t complaining.
You would get to see Dayoon more often and had easier ways to communicate with the rest of the world since you were in such a big city.
You had gotten the job to the company that you always wished to work in at the same time you saw Dayoon perform her debut stage on M! Countdown on your TV.
Despite Dayoon’s rapidly growing popularity, you managed to stay in contact. It was funny how the both of you told each other the same things you would talk about when you were in high school.
For the last two years, her stories were about her quiet and antisocial bodyguard that she somehow fell in love with, without even having a proper conversation with him.
It was a total Romeo and Juliet situation without the sappy love confessions.
Now, today was the day that you would finally meet the mystery man. You would probably be able to recognize him on the streets due to the fact that Dayoon had described him in such detail.
You chuckle to yourself as you make your way up the stairs towards Dayoon’s apartment. You double check the address typed down on your phone and match it up with the small, painted numbers on the doors.
“Hmm. It’s here,” you mutter to yourself and rap your fist on the door.
You hear light footsteps on the other side of the wall, a huge smile taking over your face when you see Dayoon pop her head out.
“Y/N!” she screams as she tackles you in a hug.
You laugh as you steady yourself and hug her back.
“I MISSED YOU SO MUCH!” Dayoon squeals, jumping up and down.
You were glad that Dayoon looked pretty much the same as she did in high school besides the fact that now, she had a defined jawline and thinner figure. Her hair was dyed light brown with her black roots beginning to show at the top of her head.
“Come in, come in!” Dayoon pulls you into her house, letting you see the place that she calls home.
“Wow,” you nod in approval. She had a decently sized house that was nice and cozy with all her furniture set up in an organized manner.
Dayoon turns around from the hot pot of tea she was pouring out and grins at you. “Nice isn’t it?”
She quickly hands you the cup of tea and sits at her dining table, gesturing you to do the same. You gladly do so, sighing in content as you wrap your hands around the warm drink and sit down on the comfy cushion tied to the wooden chair.
“He’s going to be here in a few,” Dayoon says as a light tint of red appears on her face.
You raise an eyebrow in question, but quickly realize that she was talking about her bodyguard.
You chuckle as you shake your head and set your drink down. “What was his name again?”
Before she could answer, a knock on the door interrupts. Dayoon happily grins and rushes towards the doors, earning another laugh from you.
You hear mumbling from the doorway urging you to stand up and greet the love of your best friend’s life.
You peek your head behind Dayoon to finally see the man that Dayoon talked about for the last two years.
As the figure comes into your line of vision, you softly gasp as your jaw drops.
He was actually attractive.
More than you expected at least.
He couldn’t be a year older than you. His round, doe eyes had a childlike glint to them as if he hadn’t experienced the trials and sufferings of the harsh reality. His hair was brown and looked soft at the touch. His lips were set in a firm line as his eyes glanced at your figure.
His body wasn’t super bulky and buff, but it was obvious that he worked out. His shoulders were broad, his suit fitting perfectly against his firm chest and body.
If you weren’t already head over heels for your local florist, you probably would’ve developed a crush on the man in front of you.
After your scanning of the guard, you extend your hand and offer a smile. “Hi. I’m Y/N. Dayoon’s high school friend.”
The man’s round eyes narrow at you, but he grasps your hand in a firm handshake.
“Nice to meet you. My name is Jungkook, Dayoon’s bodyguard,” he offers a tight smile.
You frown, uncomfortable at the way he stared at you suspiciously like you would suddenly lead a group of crazy fans into the room.
Scratch out the part of him being good-looking. His first impression was trash.
“You should come in! We were just about to have dinner,” Dayoon breaks the slight tension and offers the both of you a wide smile. “You should try Y/N’s cooking. She likes to cook for a hobby. Be a judge and taste test some of her food.”
You meet eyes with Jungkook again and sense that he has his guard up.
He didn’t trust you.
Your eyes narrow into small slits at his tense stance. It wasn’t like you were going to poison the food.
“I think I’m okay,” Jungkook says, firmly as he looks away from you and gives Dayoon a small smile. “I just came to let you know that I’m here.”
You would’ve continued giving him the death glare, but you spot Dayoon’s smile falter and her nod in disappointment.
Jerk.
“Oh. Alright. I’ll make sure to tell you if anything’s wrong,” Dayoon says as she forces a smile at the oblivious man who was currently nodding and shutting the door.
As soon at the door shuts, Dayoon bangs her head against the wall and groans.
“Asshole,” you mutter before turning around concerned. “Hey, are you okay?”
Dayoon sighs and shakes her head mumbling, “Perfect example of what I was talking about over the phone for these past two years.”
You sigh in sympathy for your moping friend and turn back to glare at the door.
“I don’t think he’s worth it,” you say, harshly. Dayoon lifts her head from against the wall at your sudden declaration.
“What?” she frowns.
You turn back to her and shake your head. “I can just tell that he doesn’t like me. He was shooting me these dirty looks the whole time I was standing at the door!”
Dayoon chuckles and gives you a light pat on your shoulder. “He’s a bodyguard. He’s supposed to intimidate people and protect me from them.”
“But I’m your friend!” you exclaim. “Why would he need to protect you from me?”
Dayoon shrugs, too caught up in her own thoughts to show any understanding of your situation.
You sigh and grab her shoulders to lead her to the sofa. “Catch up on your drama while I make you some spaghetti.”
Dayoon turns to face you with a huge grin.
She loved spaghetti.
“Oh geez. I’m full,” Dayoon groans as she pats her stomach. “I’m going to be so bloated tomorrow morning.”
You chuckle as you finish off your own sauce with the garlic bread.
“Y/N. It’s getting late. Should I call you a taxi?” Dayoon asks, worried.
You shake your head. “Nuh uh. Taxis are expensive these days.”
Dayoon rolls her eyes. “It’s fine. I can pay for it.”
You widen your eyes in protest. You hated it when other people offered to pay for things.
“No! I’m going to walk home. It’s good exercise for me and a healthy option for the environment.”
Dayoon tries to argue with you, but in the end she accepts that your stubbornness is too much for her to deal with.
“Alright. Walk home. Just be careful. It’s the time of the night when there are a lot of drunkards lurking around,” Dayoon says as you wave your hand in her face.
“I’m fine, I’m fine. Goodnight, Dayoon!” you shout as you quickly grab your things.
“Let’s meet up again in two weeks! It’s going to be promotion week this week and next week, but there’s a day when I have no schedule,” Dayoon suggests with a small smile.
“Okay! Call me!” you say as you give her a hug and bid her goodnight once more.
You slip on your sneakers and walk out the door with a smile on your face that automatically disappears when you spot Jungkook leaning against the wall opposite from you.
You close the door and stand still, observing him from where you were standing.
“Um... Goodbye,” you quietly say before speed walking past him. Just as you get down five steps on the stairs, a voice stops you from going any further.
“Jungkook, did Y/N leave yet?” Dayoon asks.
You whip around and see Jungkook point over to where you were standing.
“No.”
Dayoon sighs in relief. “Good. Y/N, I’m sorry, but I’m worried about you walking home alone at this hour that I’m going to have Jungkook walk you home.”
Your eyes widen. “WHAT!?”
Jungkook’s eyes widen at Dayoon as he suppresses a groan of complaint.
“Y/N. I get that you can handle yourself, but just so I can have a good night’s sleep, I’m sending Jungkook with you,” Dayoon says firmly.
Your lips turn into a straight line as you clutch your bag closer to you.
“I told you! I swear I’m fine walki-”
“Miss Dayoon, please rest for today,” Jungkook interrupts. “I’ll make sure she gets home safe.”
Dayoon nods gratefully, her cheeks slightly pink before turning to you and shooting a stern glare. She waves goodnight to both of you and disappears behind the click of the door.
You stand still for a minute, staring at the door and let your mind play hundreds of ways that things can go awkward as you walk home with this stranger who obviously did not like you one bit.
Jungkook suddenly clears his throat, making you look up at him expectantly.
It seemed that he wasn’t too fond of this walking you home thing either.
“We should get going,” he states, passing by you down the stairs and into the chilly air outside.
You sigh softly before following behind him with your thin cardigan pulled closely to your body. A poor attempt to stay warm against the sharp, cold wind softly blowing through your hair.
The walk to your house with Jungkook wasn’t as awkward as you thought it would be. The two of you didn’t speak to each other while you were walking other than Jungkook asking what direction your house was in. You listed a couple of street names and it immediately became quiet again.
The silence was surprisingly comfortable, the only sound being the soft clicks of Jungkook’s dress shoes and the clunks of your Superstar sneakers.
You decide to start up a conversation between the two of you. You figured that you would be seeing him often since you made plans for the next hang out with Dayoon.
So why not?
“Um…” you say, slightly cringing at how your voice sounded sharp and loud compared to the quiet.
You see Jungkook flinch from the corner of your eye, but continue staring right ahead and give yourself a short little pep talk to remain confident in your words.
“What’s your favorite color?” you blurt out. You sure were confident, but you were more panicked than confident.
Jungkook stays silent for a while before finally answering you. “Black.”
You nod, softly sighing in relief that he didn’t completely ignore you. Not knowing what to say next, you hesitate before saying, “I like y/f/c.”
Not wanting the silence to reappear and suffocate you, you quickly come up with a random question as if you were a teacher asking questions to a first grader.
“What’s your favorite animal?”
Jungkook gives you a side glance, thinking you were the weirdest person ever, but still answers your question. He didn’t want to come off as a complete jerk.
Although you already thought that about him.
Not that he needed to know.
“Dogs.”
You almost huff in frustration at his one-word answers.
“Do you have any siblings?”
“One older brother.”
Three words.
It was getting better.
A flutter of questions are asked constantly by you with Jungkook answering them in short worded answers. You quickly grow tired of “favorite ice cream?” “favorite flower?” “favorite sauce?” “favorite food?” “hobby?” and “favorite blah blah blah” that ran around in your brain.
Jungkook had surprisingly answered each and every one of your questions except one of them.
It was when you had asked him, “How’d you get this job?” and he remained silent.
He seemed to shift at your question and you decided not to push it. You barely knew the guy anyway.
“Do you… like your job?” you cautiously ask. You let out a low gasp when Jungkook suddenly stops in his tracks and looks at your direction for the first time ever since you started walking.
You gulp and timidly turn to face him. Then you realize, that he was looking at something over your shoulder. Not at you.
You whip around in slight terror only to see the fat house numbers that seemed to welcome you back home.
“This is your house?” you hear him ask.
You nod and stay turned around. “T-Thank you… For walking me,” you say as you bite down a shiver crawling up your spine.
Jungkook pays no attention to your shivering figure, only giving a small nod before walking back down the way you came.
You frown at his retreating back and groan, bringing your hands up to your face.
“That was one hell of a walk.”
Jungkook had made his appearance now and then in your mind whenever you were walking to or from your work back to your house alone.
Fortunately, after a week and a half, your brain completely forgets about your best friend’s quiet but rude bodyguard who would most certainly not be able to trust you with a pen.
Pushing those thoughts aside, you were currently enjoying the morning walk to your favorite flower shop that was a five-minute walk from your house.
Not only did that flower shop have the most beautiful flowers and bouquets you have ever seen in your entire twenty-seven years of living, but you have also seen the most beautiful man working with the flowers.
Min Yoongi.
The neighborhood florist.
His cousin, Park Jimin, was favored a lot more by the young, single women in your neighborhood, but something about the kind-eyed and soft-spoken man who you always tried to strike up a conversation with intrigued you. Over time, you harbored a crush on Yoongi.
“Y/N!”
You immediately smile at Jimin’s bright, bubbly voice as you walk through the door. You give him a wave from across the shop as he gives you one of his famous eye smiles.
“How are you doing?” he says, running up to you and pulling you into a bear hug.
“I’m doing fine,” you chuckle, pulling away as he ruffles your hair.
“Yoongi’s been missing you,” he whispers, making you roll your eyes and shoving him for him to go behind the counter.
Jimin laughs at your reaction.
From the moment you stepped into the flower shop on the second month after you moved, the friendly florist had straight-up confronted you about his cousin that you had developed a crush on.
It led to a giggly Jimin and you turning into a red tomato, but nevertheless, Jimin gave you a lot of chances for you to talk to Yoongi. He helped you and Yoongi to talk to each other without awkward pauses. The friendship you and Yoongi formed was all thanks to Jimin.
You were thankful, but also nervous on some days where Jimin was extra energetic. He had tendencies where he would blurt out random facts and you were scared that one day, he would be blurting out to Yoongi about your feelings.
“I’m being serious. He asked me about your whereabouts yesterday,” Jimin lets out a dramatic sigh. “It surprised me for sure. Yoongi never asks me about anything. Nonetheless, a person. A girl.”
“Shut up,” you say, pressing your hands against your heated cheeks. “I was busy with work. I’ve been working overtime for the past few days due to this new marketing project the team leader decided to launch on us.”
It was total hell. Your boss was a nice woman, but when it came to work she was not lenient.
Not at all.
Jimin gives you a sympathetic smile that quickly changes into a smirk as the bell jingles, indicating that someone entered the flower shop.
You turn around curiously, feeling your breath catch in your throat at the man who just entered the shop, looking as good as ever without his dress shirt and brown apron. Instead of the normal work clothes that you always saw him in, Yoongi had on a black turtleneck, a pair of black ripped jeans, a leather jacket, and a black cap with two rings on the rim.
Simply put. He was dressed differently.
And pretty hotly.
“Hey, Yoongi. I was just about to tell our regular about how it was your free day today,” Jimin grins and without looking back at him, you knew that Jimin had that mischievous glint in his eyes.
Yoongi half-smiles as a greeting towards Jimin.
“Good morning,” Yoongi says, turning to you with a small smile and soft eyes.
“Uh… M-Morning. You have an off day today?” you awkwardly ask, darting your eyes away from his all-black outfit that caused you to be in your current flustered state.
“Yup. But I think I can arrange a small bunch for you today,” Yoongi says nonchalantly, walking behind the counter and silently shooing Jimin away to the back room.
Jimin sends you a cheeky wink before disappearing behind the door leaving you and Yoongi alone in the room. Only the quiet hums of the sprinklers were heard, filling the comfortable silence.
“What would you like today?” Yoongi asks, shrugging off his jacket and placing it on a nearby chair.
You gulp.
Tell him. Tell him. Tell him. Your mind repeats the two words like a mantra.
“Just came… to visit,” you let out a shaky breath.
Close enough.
“To see me?” he teases with a playful smile.
Your eyes widen, cheeks turning red. Did he know? How did he read your mind? Maybe he has secret superpowers?
Yoongi shakes his head at your reaction, his gummy smile still present.
“I’m joking, Y/N,” he rolls his eyes. “Even though you’re not here for any flowers, is it okay if I arrange one for you anyway?”
“Yeah…?” you hesitantly say. Before your thoughts run wild, you visibly shake your head and follow Yoongi who was already moving towards the rows of pots to grab the flowers for your small bouquet after shrugging off his jacket and wearing an apron.
“Haven’t seen you in a while,” Yoongi murmurs, knowing you were right beside him as he carefully takes hold of a few daisies.
You look at him, thinking that maybe, just maybe, Jimin was telling the truth and not messing with you earlier about Yoongi wondering where you were.
“I’ve been busy with work,” you sigh. “Working overtime made me unable to wake up in the mornings and buy a small bouquet of your flowers.”
A small frown is etched onto Yoongi’s perfect, kissable lips. It was cute, but you sure didn’t like seeing him with that look on his face.
“What’s different with today?” he asks.
“I called in sick.”
Yoongi stops handling the numerous flowers he’s managed to pick in the short amount of time and looks at you almost worriedly.
“Are you?”
“Nope,” you clarify with a breathy laugh and Yoongi visibly relaxes.
He grins before moving to the counter that was meant for bouquets to be arranged on and spreads out the colorful flowers.
“I never knew you would lie so you could have a day off from work.”
“In my defense, I think I am catching a cold,” you say and lean against the cashier counter. “Maybe it’s because I’m walking home every night.”
“Why don’t you ride the bus? It’s warmer. And safer,” Yoongi suggests.
You shake your head. “By the time I’m off work these days, the buses have stopped running.”
“Stop working so much,” Yoongi says with a tone that you can’t quite decipher. “If you have so much work that you have to work overtime, at least have someone drive you home or walk you after.”
You let your gaze fall on Yoongi’s stance. Still lazily picking and removing flowers from one hand to the other, but a frown still present and his eyebrows knit together in... concentration? Worry?
You didn’t really know.
Ignoring the rapid heartbeat that was ringing in your ears, you respond with a sarcastic remark. “Is THE Min Yoongi actually worrying about a mere office worker like me?” you dramatically gasp making Yoong scoff.
“Well,” he tuts. “You’re not just a mere office worker to me, Y/N.”
You immediately tense up at his words that made your heart pound against your ribcage.
Before you could embarrass yourself or respond with a snarky remark of your own, the door to the shop opens. The cold wind that breezes in through the glass doors makes you step away from the counter and hide behind a large shelf of baskets.
Yoongi glances up, hiding a smile at how cute you were standing in the random center of a row, crossing your arms across your chest, and looking around as if it was your first time in here.
Yoongi almost forgets that a customer had come in and jerks his head up only to make eye contact with the boy that he began to live with from the age of four.
“Hyung!” the boy - no.
Scratch that.
The young man, calls out to him with a bunny-like smile gracing his features.
“Jungkook?” Yoongi calls out, shocked that the kid actually paid him a visit at his shop.
The shop that Jungkook swore he would never go into because of that one time where there was a horrid smell of a dead rat in the vent that drove more than half of Yoongi’s customers away.
It was hard getting back the favor of his customers after that incident.
ANYWAYS
Hearing voices in the usual peaceful and quiet flower shop makes you peek out from the shelf you were behind and stare confusedly at Yoongi’s smiley face.
You step out from behind the tall shelf, only to take a step back when you see a just as smiley man across the counter that had a half-completed bouquet set on it.
Jeon Jungkook.
Dayoon’s personal bodyguard.
Sweet as Sugar
Originally posted on: Archive of Our Own, under the pseud jeonsbbg Description: A small drabble about how Yoongi is sick of hearing his roommate talk about how cute the new guy next door is, so he does something about it.
More under the cut.
As you lounged on the couch, the remote in one hand and a handful of chips in the other, a knock sounded on the door. You turned around to look at it, before glancing into the kitchen to where your roommate Yoongi was preparing lunch.
"Yoongi, someone's at the door." You mumbled, before opening your mouth widely and shoving said chips into your mouth.
"Stop being a lazy ass and go open it." The blond muttered, too busy chopping up tomatoes to deal with you. With a roll of your eyes, you grabbed a towel and wiped your flavouring-covered hand on it and attempted to chew the food in your mouth. It took you a few tries, but you eventually got it down. You glanced at yourself to make sure your outfit was clean and you looked decent before opening the door.
"Oh, hi!" Your neighbour said. He'd moved into the unit next to you and Yoongi a couple of days ago, and you couldn't deny that he was super cute. He looked to be either around your age or younger, with clear skin and a head full of dark brown hair. His eyes were dark as well, and his lips were full and pink. That's when you realised you'd been quiet for far too long and snapped out of your haze.
"Hello!" You replied, raising your hand in a slight wave. "What can I do you for?" You asked, head tilting to the side.
"I was just wondering if you had any sugar I could borrow." He said, a small smile gracing his face as he watched at you.
"Well-" You began to say, only to be interrupted by your roommate.
"Oh, take [Y/N], they're as sweet as can be." Yoongi said, before pushing you out into the hallway and shutting the door behind you. Your neighbour chuckled as you muttered a curse under your breath. You pushed down on the door handle, only to realise that Yoongi had locked it.
"Min Yoongi I swear to every god if you don't open this door right now!" You yelled, kicking the door with your bare foot. You winced in pain, now realising that wasn't a good idea.
"Wow, is being out here with me so bad that you'd maim yourself to get away?" The neighbour asked with a raised brow. A blush rose to your cheeks as you shook your head and mumbled 'no' several times.
"It's not that; Yoongi's making lunch and I'm starving. I don't know when he's gonna let me back in." You explained.
"I'll let you in when you finally get his number and stop telling me how cute he is! I've got a boyfriend already, thanks!" Yoongi called from the other side of the door. You dropped your head into your hands, vowing silently to choke Yoongi as soon as he let you back in.
"So, [Y/N], I'm cute eh?" Neighbour Boy asked, a crooked grin now on his face.
"Oh, don't act like you don't know you look good, Mr....?" You trailed off, waiting for his name.
"Jeongguk. So, I moved up from cute to good looking. This is an honour." He replied, that infuriating grin still on his face.
"We've known each other for all of two minutes and I'm ready to drop kick you." You muttered, turning away and beating on the door with a closed fist.
"If you do that you'll never get my number, then you'll never get your lunch. Be nice~" Jeongguk sing-songed, causing you to scrunch your face up at him.
"I'm so sorry I threatened to drop kick you, O Great Hot One. What can I do to ever make it up to you?" You said, placing your hands together and bowing to the cocky boy in front of you.
"Take me out to lunch this weekend." He said simply, pulling a pen out of his pocket.
"Why would I take you out to lunch? It's your fault I'm out here missing my lunch." You said. He took your arm as he scribbled something onto your forearm.
"Because I just got you back into your apartment so you're not missing your lunch. You're welcome." Jeongguk replied, capping the pen and slipping it into his pocket. You watched him as he walked back to his unit, leaving you there with ten numbers on the inside of your arm and an astonished look on your face.
Well, Jeongguk may have not gotten any sugar today, but you just might give him some eventually if your cards played out well.
