First They Killed My Father ,NY Premiere, September 14,2017.
Ok ANYWAYS? first they killed my father is the pinacle of cinema. I've never seen anything more moving, more representive of my parents', my grandparents', and my great grandmother's struggle, or any of my fellow Cambodian people.
we suffered the killing fields, the camps, the mines, and so much of those memories are lost. I cannot say how much this movie matters to me- I cried from the very beginning, from where they danced to that old 70s song my grandmother used to play, to the end, where they crossed the river as my family did. Even now, I tear up thinking about it.
All of the stories they told me were true, and this movie allowed but a GLIMPSE of what it was like during Pol Pot's regime. I sat behind a screen and I had the privilege to cry, to show vulnerability. Please, watch this movie and remember that, while you have that same privilege, those people of that time did not. Remember them, please, remember Cambodia.
