Hey!! Happy Mar10 day everyone!!

I don't have the energy to draw anything at the moment, but I at least cranked out a little fic that I hope you'll enjoy. <3

I figured that, since I HC that Mario came out as, well, Mario on March 10th, this was the perfect kind of situation to write about today. ^^

For all intents and purposes, Mario will be referred to with his deadname throughout most of this ficlet but I promise it’s for good reason-

“What about Alessandro?”

“N-No, you don’t—don’t look l-like an A-Alessand-dro.”

 Another name crossed off the list. Mariella had recently come out as transgender to his brother, Luigi, and now the pair were workshopping new names since they had a week off of school for spring break. He wanted something that was clearly masculine, but could also have a gender-neutral nickname in case he ever decided that he was maybe nonbinary rather than fully male.

“Okay, um…” He hummed in response, leaning against the chain handle of the swing he was sitting on as he idly swung his legs while he read the next names off the list.

“Luca?”

“That—That’s too close to m-me!” Luigi argued with a little chuckle.

Mariella shook his head at that comment. “Fine, fine. How about Romeo?”

“Th-Then we’d need to find a J-Juliette f-for you. I-I’m not—I’m not a g-great w-w-wingman.” Luigi replied, receiving a laugh from his brother.

“…Y-Y’know, you c-could always j-just use M-Mario.” Luigi then half-heartedly joked after a moment.

Mariella sat up a little straighter at that comment. “…Wait, that’s genius actually—” He blurted, quickly scribbling ‘Mario’ under the various crossed out names he had written in his mini notebook and circling it several times.

“Mario, I think that’s actually the one!!” Mario cheered, happily kicking his legs a little.

“W-Wait, I was just kid—kidding…” Luigi tried to explain.

“Nonono, that’s perfect! Mario Mario, that has a nice ring, don’t ‘cha think?” Mario replied, seeming happier than ever since he had first come out to his brother a couple weeks prior.

Luigi thought about it for a second, and yeah, actually, that sounded nice. Mario Mario and Luigi Mario? Now that sounded like a duo you wouldn’t want to mess with.

“Y-Yeah, actually!!” Luigi agreed with an excited nod.

“Alright, then that settles it!” Mario responded, happily closing his notebook and putting the pen and pad back in his hoodie’s pocket. “We can workshop my middle name later, I’m starving—” He then commented as he stood up.

“Fair, s-same here.” Luigi agreed as he carefully got off the swing he was sitting on. “Wh-What’re we th-thinking?”

“McDonald’s? That’s the closest and cheapest thing I can think of.”

“S-Sure!”

And with that, Luigi and his brother Mario headed off to take their lunch break, glad to at least have that part of the situation figured out now.

(Before we even get into this, I'm so sorry this took so long! I've had a lot going on recently, so I only now finished it even though I started it the day you requested it. I don't even remember how long ago you requested this-)

Honestly?? I never thought about doing that. I’ve never experienced EXTREME dysphoria, so I can only fulfill that to a certain extent, but hopefully this will suffice.

Since this takes place early(ish) on in Mario’s transition, Luigi has not figured out that she’s bigender yet. So, just to keep it accurate to the time, I will only be using he/him for her.

⚠️ On that note, this fic deals with gender dysphoria and transphobia, as well as self-deprecation. This is generally much angstier than usual.

Mario was sitting on the steps outside his parents’ apartment building, holding his knees to his chest as he cried for the first time since… probably since he was a child, repeatedly having tantrums over not being able to participate in the same things as his brother just because he was a girl. But even after coming out to them – granted, in the heat of a recent argument gone awry due to his mother’s reaction – he still didn’t feel happy. Understandably, he didn’t feel happy because his mother was incredibly upset about this realization, even threatening to kick him out if he wanted to keep going ‘that way’. That wasn’t how this was supposed to happen – this wasn’t supposed to happen at all. Weren’t parents supposed to love their kids unconditionally? What did he do wrong?

Just before he could get swallowed by his thoughts, his brother, Luigi, exited the apartment building in search of Mario. Once he noticed Mario, he carefully descended the concrete staircase and sat next to his brother in spite of how cold and wet the steps were now from the rain. “H-Hey…” He quietly greeted, putting a hand on his brother’s back.

Mario flinched as Luigi set his hand on his back, curling further into himself. Once he was relaxed, he made a small noise to greet Luigi back.

Luigi frowned a bit at that response, knowing Mario wasn’t feeling well. Honestly, he wouldn’t either if that was how his mother was going to react to her kid being anything but cisgender and straight. “Y-You okay, bro…?” He then asked, almost instinctively calling Mario ‘bro’ as a term of endearment.

Mario simply shook his head in response, letting out a slight hiccup as his tears finally slowed, likely because he simply had none left. “N-No…” He whimpered in response, slightly shaking his head.

Luigi paused for a moment, genuinely not knowing how to help in this situation. Normally this would be the other way around, with Mario comforting him. But now it was his turn, and it was only fair that he returned the favor. “…H-Hey, Ma d-doesn’t know what—what she’s t-talking about—”

“Of course she does…!” Mario responded, sitting up and facing his brother, his face wet with tears and his eyes red and blood shot. “Because mother knows best or whatever the fuck—” He continued, genuinely not caring about the fact that he cussed. “…I didn’t even want to have that argument, but what else was I supposed to do…!? I didn’t want her thinking I was doing drugs, but I didn’t think she was gonna threaten to kick me out just because I…!” He whimpered, his breath hitching as he simply curled in on himself again, not wanting his brother to see him cry.

“H-Hey, hey…!” Luigi responded, rubbing Mario’s back in an attempt to comfort him. “Mario…! Y-You know sh-she’s probably j-just over-re-reacting, she d-does that…!”

“Oh yeah? What about ‘You’re not going to be a man under my roof! If you want to keep doing that shit, you can get out!’ gives you that impression?” Mario snapped in response. Of course, seeing how Luigi flinched as Mario raised his voice, he immediately curled further in on himself, feeling bad for eliciting that kind of reaction. “…S-Sorry…” He muttered against his knees, before taking a shaky deep breath.

Luigi sighed a little bit at that, trying to calm himself down a bit after his brother’s outburst. “I-It’s ok—okay.” He replied. “I-I know it seems l-like i-it’s not, but—but I-I’ll be h-here for you…”

Mario glanced at Luigi as he sniffled, trying to calm himself down as tears continued stinging in his eyes. “Th-Thanks Lu…” He muttered, looking back down at the ground. Of course, looking that direction brought his chest into view – his stupid fat chest that he had to have because girls just had to be physically different – and made him sit up, looking straight forward so he didn’t have to remind himself of the horrid body he was born in.

Luigi, becoming a little startled by the sudden movement, removed his hand from Mario’s back and scooted an inch or two away from him, in case he was going to get up.

“I… I’m never going to be a man, am I…?” Mario quietly asked after a moment, resting his arms in his lap as he stared off at nothing. “I’m just gonna be stuck in this stupid body that I didn’t ask for and all I’m gonna get out of it is—” He continued rambling, clearly becoming more and more upset as he talked.

“Mario!” Luigi responded, cutting the other off as he placed his hand on Mario’s arm. “You’re always going to be a man—You always have been, even if nobody else saw it or knew about it.” He continued, talking a little slower than normal to hopefully decrease his stuttering for the moment. “E-Even if it takes—takes a while, you—you were and are Mario, and n-nobody can change that.”

Mario broke his gaze and looked over at Luigi with a sad smile, before suddenly jumping on him to hug him. “Thank you…!” He muttered against Luigi’s shoulder.

Luigi almost instinctively hugged Mario back, not even caring that they were both soaked from the rain at this point. “O-Of course…! Wh-What are b-brothers for?”

Mario Character Sheet

Since this one involves partial nudity (NOTHING inappropriate is shown, Mario's just in his boxers for a couple of the pics so I can get his scars), I'm gonna just talk about details for the character first. In other posts, the pictures will be first, and then this whole spiel.

For his voice, I'd probably do Justin Timberlake, specifically based on his Trolls performance. No offense to Pratt (maybe a little?), but I would not subject my Mario to having that voice, though I'll admit he was fine for movie!Mario. I looked up a bunch of BTS voice acting stuff and thought Justin fit well with how I imagine Mario, at least if he were to do an accent on top of it. I also have HCs for the other characters, but those will be in their respective posts.

Mario's pretty scuffed from his various fights with Bowser, and so he's got some gnarly scars and burns. He also has top surgery scars (he's 🏳️‍⚧️ to me, if you haven't seen my other posts-), but he HAS NOT had bottom surgery yet, hence why I clarified that in the picture with his burn.

Mario IS fat (to me-)! I've seen people draw Mario skinnier than he actually is, and so I figured I'd change it up and give him a little more heft. Peach and Daisy gotta have a good teddy bear to hug at the end of the day, y'know? Just because he's heavier-set, he's still way stronger than he looks, though. I kinda took this idea from @elitadream and their interpretation of Mario, so even though I did it differently, I still wanna give credit where it's due there.

Mario's overalls have patches! 1) I think it adds some character, and 2) you can't be fighting Bowser on a regular basis and expect to not come out with ripped clothes, y'know? So, either Peach or Luigi help patch them up when needed.

Anywho, I think that just about covers everything, so, the character sheet (and individual pictures) will be under the cut! To reiterate from before, there is partial nudity so I could show Mario's scars, but nothing is explicitly shown. Just a heads up there. (I WOULD blur them like you can on discord, but I don't know if/how you can do that here-)

I'll also reblog with outfits as I find ones I can see him wearing, just so y'all can view/use them and also for my own reference.
