Draft 3: chapter 1 excerpt

Aurora stood over Averick’s body, coated in sweat, breathing hard. Although young, the Volgel had put up a decent fight. But now, its host was dead and its tail hers for the taking. If the Jinu doesn’t stop me. She didn’t have much time to separate the tail before it became useless and the Volgel’s power would remain.

The Jinu hadn’t moved during her fight. It had even dropped its mental attack letting her fight in peace although she had remained wary that it would attack as she was distracted. They watched each other now, Aurora wiping the blood off one of her daggers.

“I suppose I should thank you.” The Jinu seemed amused. “Now I don’t have to train that useless creature. I’ve never meet a weaker Kulima that survived as long as that one.” It used the derogatory word as casually as a nickname. “I suppose now I have to kill you. I can’t have you going around telling people what I am. It seems a shame to waste such talent. How would feel about taking his place?” It gestured to the body laying in front of her.

She didn’t bother to respond waiting in a careful fighting stance.

The Volgel groaned as it raised itself slowly from the bed. “Curse these old bodies.” It muttered. “It would be nice to inhabit someone young for once. Why do you humans insist on the oldest people being in charge?”
