Fuchsia Heath in Open Forest
After walking 2 km from Heathcote station through the Royal National Park, I reached the escarpment above Karloo Pool and Kangaroo Creek. In early May the native fuchsia were in bloom, lit by the early morning light rays of Autumn.
The trees in the background are Angophora Costata, the Smooth Barked Apple. They are the dominant trees on the ridges but not found down on the creek.
Gorgeous purple and white bell shaped flowers, in profusion.
The leaves of the Gymea Lily, Doryanthes excelsa in the foreground which will later produce a six metre long spike. In the middle is a Fuchsia with some Grey iron bark eucalyptus trees behind.
Worthy as Christmas decorations surely?
I can imagine first nations people sheltering under these overhangs in poor weather, while keeping watch for the wallabies common in the area.
This image shows the spiky leaves of the Fuchsias, as well as the flowers.
Open woodland on the top of the escarpment, carved out of sedimentary strata.
