Step-mom: Leave if you don't like it but stop bad mouthing this country. It's offensive to those that are patriotic and love this country. It's the generation that's the downfall. Not the foundation. I see you complain a lot, where were you at the last election? Not at the polls.

I'VE ONLY BEEN ABLE TO VOTE FOR FOUR YEARS!!!

My response: I was learning. I'm still learning. When i feel confident I understand the issues well enough to begin attempting political change, I'll start voting. And its offensive? Its offensive??? Its offensive to black people that are treated like criminals by the country that is supposed to be protecting them. Its offensive to practitioners of the Muslim faith that every single one of them is forced to wait for HOURS in airports simply because of their faith while NO ONE stops a white Catholic even though the KKK has been just as big a danger to this country as ISIS or Al-Qaeda. Its offensive to us twenty somethings to say this is OUR fault that the country we were born into and were told to pledge allegiance to is riddled with problems when we've only JUST NOW been able to start getting involved. I've been able to vote for four years Marla. How is rampant racism and sexism and ableism and classism in our government, in our media, and in our daily lives MY FAULT? Maybe I, like so many people my age, don't have any faith in this system and are trying to find something we can do? Something else we can do to help the masses understand what the hell is going on in this country. Like educate ourselves, educate others, and educate the people in power. This isn't my fault or my generation's fault. Where have you been for the last thirty something years? Why hasn't it gotten much better? Why are people just as ignorant and violent and rude and backwards as they were in the sixties, in the thirties, in the eighteen fucking hundreds. yeah its gotten a bit better legally. But Black people still fear white people, white people still fear criticism, and both attack the other whenever they feel threatened. The only difference, Marla, is that when people like you do it, it is called patriotism. When people like Mike Brown's family, or Eric Garner's family, or people who support those families do it, it is called "badmouthing America." Maybe if America was better than it already is, we wouldn't have to badmouth it. Maybe that's how we want to fix it. By going "hey look at this huge problem in our country, lets fix it." That's what my generation is doing. Finding the issues that YOUR generation hasn't had time to fix, and hasn't had time to acknowledge as problems. Maybe my generation was the first one born into a world where being a blatant racist was illegal, and thus is the first generation going "WHOA WHOA WHOA this shit is still screwed up lets figure something out." My generation isn't in power Marla. My generation isn't the one making policy changes, running for office, or running police departments. We are fighting for representation because YOUR generation keeps saying its our fault, then making it harder for us to step up and figure shit out by bad-mouthing the decisions and opinions we have.
