“Here should be good,” I said softly, patting Ferrus’s neck — signaling him to stop.
He slowed at once. When I slid down from his back, the air felt strangely still — like the calm before the storm.
“Thanks for bringing me home, Ferrus.” My hand lingered against his snout. “You can rest now. I’ll put you with the others.”
He let out a low hum, deep and resonant, before his body began to dissolve — black to gray to drifting ash. Watching it never got any easier.
Soon, all that was left was the thumbtack, glinting faintly in the dust.
I crouched, picking it up gingerly between my fingers. The metal was still warm from his borrowed life. I slipped it into the pouch beneath my coat, alongside the rest — a little collection of lives I’d created.
I didn’t have many; I never let myself. One for fighting, one for defense, one for escape, and so on. I told myself it was enough, that more would only make it harder to remember all their names.
Straightening, I turned toward HQ in the distance. The wind carried faint warmth even from this far out — calm and familiar, brushing against my coat and stirring the feathers of my hood.
“Won’t be long now,” I murmured, though it sounded less like a statement and more like a wish.
Even though there was what felt like an invisible wall between me and the others, it was still my home. And even if they didn’t think of me fondly, it didn’t mean I didn’t think of them that way.
I smiled to myself as I began to walk, the earth cool and uneven beneath my feet, the dim lights of my home ahead.

I stood just outside the door. As much as I’d missed the place, the familiar weight of anxiety still settled in my chest — like one day I’d walk in and find I wasn’t wanted anymore. Like I was useless again.
“Stop,” I whispered to myself. “They’d never do that.” Even to my own ears, I sounded uncertain.
I took a slow breath and finally pushed the door open.
“Hey, look who’s back. Still as spick and span as ever, huh?”
Semiu’s voice carried from behind her desk, lazy and light. One hand waved, the other still turning a pen between her fingers.
I nodded. “I try.”
My eyes flicked over the entrance hall — same walls, same clutter, same faint smell of rust. It felt good. It felt… safe.
“Don’t worry,” she said, leaning back in her chair. “It’s just the two of us here. Everyone else is either out or passed out.”
Something eased in my chest at that.
In one motion, I unclasped my coat and pulled my mask away, setting both on her desk. The air felt cool against my skin.
“You know, I still don’t get why you hide yourself like that,” Semiu said, tilting her head. “You act like you’re some kind of monster or something.”
She waved a hand dramatically, trying — and failing — to look serious.
I shook my head, smiling faintly. “I just feel more comfortable that way, I guess.”
“Don’t see why. I definitely prefer when you don’t.”
I shot her a look.
“Only kidding,” she said quickly, hands raised — though her grin didn’t budge.
“But seriously,” she added after a beat, voice softening, “with a face like yours, covering it up just seems like a waste.”
I hummed in response, reaching for my things. “I should head to my room. I haven’t slept properly in a while.”
She nodded, watched silently as I put up my wall again.
“Sleep well,” she said as I started toward the hall.
“Thanks. Oh—tell the boss I’d like to speak with him tomorrow, yeah?”
“Sure.”
Her voice followed me down the corridor, light and airy. It echoed against the metal walls, soft but steady — enough to drown out that small, stubborn fear that maybe no one cared.
For now, that was enough.
